Health-Related Effects Reported by Electronic Cigarette Users in Online Forums www.jmir.org/2013/4/e59/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+JMedInternetRes+%28Journal+of+Medical+Internet+Research+%28atom%29Interesting read, but for me it's trying to clutch at straws and is from Prue Talbot who has been anti-ecig in the past. By the NHS's own definition regarding the Metro article and survey it was taken from, this cannot really be taken as real evidence because of the user group the information was taken from. Some points also made on Facebook about this is it was taken from new users, so there could be a number of reasons for detrimental effects, such as dehydration, wrong nic level, detox from tobacco etc etc. Also the study does point out that it is unlikely people would be posting to say everything is fine all fine and dandy, so this also skews the results. As I say interesting read but not very scientific for me.

What an odd idea. Let's use Google to help us see how many people report problems with e-cigs.
How does one counteract such an idea? - Search for all the people who start threads on forums saying "I feel really excellent!- HELP!"

It reeks of desperation doesn't it.
Which is a good thing I guess.
I think Prue was involved in the flawed Cartomiser study too.

Did they collate these with the results of people who had stopped smoking and what they were experiencing . I think it is fairly well documented that most people who give up smoking " suffer " from a lot of similar withdrawal type conditions ...are they therefore saying don't stop smoking !!!!!!!!!!!

As you said Mark it only highlights the desperation and anyone with an IQ over 10 will see it for what it is. Win Win for vaping I'd say.
Maybe we could start the rumour that vaping increases intelligence ?

I think it would be safe to assume that many would have stopped smoking completely and thus symptoms could be put down to the (well documented) detox effects from stopping. So yes in a round-a-bout way I guess they are. As you said Mark it only highlights the desperation and anyone with an IQ over 10 will see it for what it is. Win Win for vaping I'd say. Maybe we could start the rumour that vaping increases intelligence ? Well being anti-vaping certainly seems to decrease it.

It took her a while to get there, but it was entirely predictable. I tried for ages to get folks to understand that all the forums were being watched very closely by folks with an axe to grind, and that their language would be taken and misinterpreted (willfully) to cast aspersions on e-cigs... fell on deaf ears. There's a lesson to be learned here.

There's a lesson to be learned here. Fair enough Dave but language used on forums especially by newbies literally cannot be policed. Of course many of the well versed among us we are now starting to choose our language more carefully. If you start jumping on newbies about terms used or posts made as soon as they sign up to a forum then what does that say about us a community? I doubt many would even hang around for long if we did. I said on VTTV chat before when the whole "don't use the word quit" debate came up. If we are going to go down that route then the real blame lays in calling them CIGARETTES in the first place. It's a fair point, but a moot one in my opinion. Edited to add: Anyone in their right mind can see this for what it is. It's so desperate it's laughable.

How much money, time and effort was wasted on producing that piece of "work?"

How much money, time and effort was wasted on producing that piece of "work?" Well it cost at least $90 to publish it on that site. It's not a peer reviewed study as quite frankly I can't believe that any of her peers could review it without getting her committed for putting it forward in the first place.

It's not her peers that worry me - it's the dense politician/antis (you know who and her ilk) that will use crap like that as "evidence" to bin e-cigs.

There's a lesson to be learned here. Would it be fair to say that politicians use "social media" these days. A study created by analysing threads on forums might also lead someone with a more open mind to read other areas of the forum and maybe take note of the amount of people that are discussing e-cigs and using them without issue. The growth of forums (members) might "help" someone see the positives, as it were?
