The chemist shop is not really relevant - just where she gave me this idea. I was going to pay, what for is also irrelevant, and found all I had in change was about half a ton of coppers. She suggested that if I used the self service checkout at Tesco just next door then I could just dump the lot into the hopper and the machine would count it in seconds. Well this was a revelation, I don't know about you lot but we have containers filled with coppers all over the place. I clear out my pockets from time to time to get rid of the shrapnel and just keep the shiny stuff. So now I'm going to put a few bags in the car and use it as money every time I use a self service checkout! I suspect we have enough loose change knocking about the place to keep me in new toys for a long time

Is the Tesco coin-counting machine a free one? I've seen the standalone type that take up to 5% of your loose change.

The machines take a % - but if thee were to bag it all up - it would take half an hour to an hour - and then that's if the bank will accept it

I don't think Mark means the coin counting machine, I think he means he's going to use his loose change at the self service checkouts to pay for his shopping!

Not the coin counting machine, but the self-checkout.

If you have had your coppers for quite some time Its a good chance they are copper and you will get more than there face value at the local scrap yard.
The machines are just helping to take the copper out of circulation as they get replaced with a copper looking steel alloy, give them the magnet test to see if there better counted or weighed.

I dump all the copper out of my purse at the self checkout too (I'm too embarrassed to stand there counting it out to a cashier!)
I used to get rid of it in the vending machine at work, but they've put a new one in now and the lowest coin it'll take is 5p

Don't know why we even have 1p and 2p in circulation anymore, what use are they these days ? it's about time they scrapped them.

Yeah I was meaning use the self checkout, they have a handy little hopper that it all drops down in a couple of seconds.

I must admit, I prefer to wait until I've got a pretty large amount, usually November every year, then use the coin machine!
I know I have to pay a percentage but it's nice to get a shopping voucher for around £30+ pounds, especially near Christmas!

That's a very good tip, I didn't know they had hoppers.
I have loads of change as I refuse to pay the %age in the machines and I also can't find a bank that will take a load that I have an account in.
