Oooo nice, I was just thinking about making a round solid wood mod and realised I needed a lathe I'm not sure it's worth the outlay just for that! What are you planning on using yours for? My latest acquisition www.cottandco.com/lots/elliott-progress-no1-pedestal-drill-1 Not this exact one. But almost the same!

I'll have to find extra time for the lathe as I can't be cutting into the monkey spanking time now can I.. Mybad what do you think of the CL300M ? I've been reading up for months now and it seems to be a nice little lathe. I've done a lot of work on wood lathes before but never on a metal lathe so there's going to be a very steep learning curve and I don't foresee Provari replica's flying out anytime soon lol Any tips/advice is always welcome..

I must admit, my mate who has forgotten more about metal working tools, than most metal working engineers have ever known, doesn't rate Clarke stuff at all. It didn't stop me buying a Clarke bench sander recently though

A provari would be easy to make (tube wise) , not sure how they do the grooves though, probably a CNC milling machine, very difficult to do at home I would have thought. Lots of other things you could do though!

What lathe would be a good buy in your opinion then? All depends Womble on what you want to do on it, how much space you have for one, how much you want to spend on one.

Not sure yet, small to medium metal work and some sorts of wood work, will have loads of space soon *, can't afford to spend anything atm, but will probably be on the lookout for a decent 2nd hand machine. Like the drill, I prefer to buy decent heavier stuff 2nd hand, which should be cheaper, or as cheap as modern stuff, but longer lasting. Although to be fair, I have no idea how this works with lathes. I trained on very heavy old machines as an apprentice in the 80's, but have had little to do with them since. *I'm in the process on planning a wooden workshop to be built in the garden, I plan to use alot of materials I already have to build it, but it will still take a decent outlay to get it the way I want, so while I'll have lots of space, I won't have any money to buy any new kit
