Hi Ian...
Nice to know that your lappy is fine now...
Just one tip ..
I saw you mention Norton in your post.
That is the worst antivirus you can get. It slows down your comp a lot.
If you want a free antivirus I would recommend Avast with spybot in the side.
If you are paying for your antivirus than I would suggest "kaspersky".
I go to almost all the spammer sites for serial number and stuff and my lappy has not been affected till now (I use avast and spybot by the way)
@roachie: I dont know why you feel chrome and firefox are not good.
Chrome is the best browser I have tried till now (Provided you have quite a lot of memory in you machine as its mutli threaded architecture takes up quite a lot of memory depending on the add ons you have installed)
Firefox is second by a very very thin margin in speed but a lot better in memory consumption.
I felt that all other browsers I tried are complete waste of time. (Internet Explorer being the worst thing you can call a browser)

I was resisting saying that about Norton, Sham - but now that you've mentioned it... However, for me the very best free combo is Microsoft Security Essentials AV, which works very well with the improved Windows Firewall and is less intrusive than anything else I've used - even Avast, which I do rate highly. The reduction in hassle from not having to install a separate firewall is gold-dust for me, I don't understand any of 'em and they're a pesky nuisance. Using Firefox with AdBlock Plus and FlashBlock helps enormously on the security front as well as saving my sanity by preventing ads appearing unless I want them. Then I've got Advanced System Care (I have CCleaner too but find ASC preferable for some reason), SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes - those are my core "utilities" but I do have more - of course! How can we resist installing this 'n that freebie when someone says it's great? I don't use NoScript, even though my techie friends recommend it, because you have to interact with and educate it and I don't understand it. (I only use Chrome and Opera for certain websites because I hate having loads of tabs open in FF.) Perhaps when Ian's settled and has time, we could go thru his security and housekeeping progs and optimise them. A lappy from PC World (or anywhere else for that matter) is bound to have loads of bloatware on it. scylla

I used to have Microsoft Security Essentials quite some time back. I had gone to Avast as it was a bit heavy...
I have been hearing quite a lot lately regarding its performance and have been thiking a lot lately of trying it once more...
I have not tried ASC and the other two you had mentioned..
Will check them out ...
Thanks Scy

Microsoft Security Essentials actually a great bit of kit (about the only fault free MS product around I think). Avast is also good but I had problems with it on Windows 7 Ultimate, used MSE for quite some time but now run ESET Smart Security (very good but not cheap). Norton is really bad and I wince every time someone says they have it, I always recommend they use one of the free ones and MSE is the current pick as in independent testing it came out about equal with Avast but as said it is very "quiet" for the user. For easy backups you can get dropbox software which gives you 2GB online storage or indeed if you use windows live they have windows live skydrive which gives you 25GB online storage free. DVD RW discs can be got very cheap for backing up these days so there is no excuse.

The person who has the balls to vape pizza can never upset me I am currently using Firefox 5 but also use chrome some times. Some of the features in Chrome is amazing.. Give it a try if you have at least 2 - 3 gig of RAM and you would enjoy it
