hoping someone can answer this, have bought 2 and 3 ml wire to use as wicks in a rsst and ud agi, no matter how I try to cut the wire it always seems to spring apart, used cutters, hacksaw and dremel, each with the same results, those of you who use these please give me a clue!

I can only tell you what I use, which I suspect won't help you at all I use a very hard pair of side cutters, known as piano wire cutters in the trade. These cut the wire ok, but sometimes leave a bit of a flat edge, which I can move around with the cutters. However, I have never had it spring apart. With a dremel it should be good, where did you get the wire from?

Wrap where you want to cut it in insulating tape and cut through the tape and wire.

I've also used side cutters up to now.. don't try to cut the whole way through with first cut, just a bit at a time..
Thing that worries me about using the dremel is thad I've read about the possibility of the cutting disc causing rust to form over time on the wire rope..

Thanks for your time and answers, thought of binding wire in insulating tape but haven't done it yet. got my wire from the ubiquitus ebay 99p a metre site and the stuff is obviously of decent quality otherwise people who use it for its intended use wouldn't rig their frigging yachts on it! Thanks again, much appreciated.

I got my wire from the same place. it is decent stuff, not sure why you are having problems with it.

suspect because I'm an idiot. But genuinely it just seems to spring into its constituent weave every time I try to cut it, thing the wrap in tape might work though

I wouldn't wrap it in tape because the glue could stay on the wire and inadvertently contaminate your juice.
I'd tightly wrap it in string or wool or even florists wire to keep it from separating while cutting.

Just remember to oxidise it as you would mesh & all contaminates will be gone as it may also contain oil in between the strands.

I used a dremel on mine (same stuff as you probably) just took my time with a cutting wheel. It seemed to stay together fine. Gotta be light pressure though, not a quick cut through, especially near the end when it is about to drop off. make sure you are cutting it in the right direction, so rotation of the cutting disc going with the direction of the "twirl" of the steel wire.

If you know any mechanics or have a mate that has access to oxy acetylene, ask him to cut it for you with the gas axe. It will never fray.
