Well today is day one of this 5:2 Fast Day Diet. I would love to hear from anyone that is on this, has tried it, your success or failure. I have tried all sorts of diets over the past couple of decades and whilst I had initial successes, eventually I would get fed up with them, regain all the lost weight and then pile on more. The Kilt that I once looked smart in can only be worn now if I put it on up-side-down!!! I have started this diet using the Kidz5aday as a meal supplement (60 cal) and will limit myself to 600 cals or less on Fast Days. Once I get used to the Fast Days, I may also supplement meals on none Fast Days with this drink, but that is for the future. Like any diet I have tried in the past, I have high hopes for this one, however there is bonus points to the 5:2 Fasting Diet in that the medical research has already been done and proven to work. So there is hope for me yet.

Yes, I'm trying to drop a couple of stones on it. It's fine as long as you don't pig out on the other days. I try to limit my calories to around 2000 or less on these days. I've also cut down on red meat to once or twice a week and increased vegetables significantly. Also cut out bread and potatoes, but still eat rice, pasta, cous-cous and quinoa.

I have seen & heard about this but don't know anyone who's actually tried it, so would be interested to see how you get on with it. Only down side for me is I have acid reflux & mainly keep it under control with diet which means regular small meals, don't think a feast to famine diet would do me any good

This is the Youtube video that first put me onto the supplement that I use on Fast Days.

I am frightened to start answering this as I could write all day about weight. I would try that diet (in fact I would eat horse poop if I thought it would help!!) but I am insulin dependant diabetic so have to eat regularly. I have big probs ATM because my meds aren't right and I am blowing up like a balloon! Hence my name that double with restricted mobility has ruine what figure I had Good luck Lobey. Keep us updated.

I will ofcourse keep you updated, but I too am on medication and so I will have to be careful.
I do check my Blood/Sugar every day and this should give me some warnings if things are not going right.
However I do think that a lot of what is being said about this diet makes good sense and a lot of what we have been brainwashed into believing over recent years about how we should eat is bunkum.
The British Population was the healthiest it had ever been by the end of WW2, simply because of the food rationing and the need to walk or cycle rather than use motor vehicles. Now I have no intention of going on a fitness regime or anything like that, but I know that I eat way too much compared to my sedentary lifestyle and if I can get used to a couple of days a week of not eating a lot, I am hoping that on those days when I am allowed to eat normal foods, then I will enjoy them better and find them more satisfying. But only time will tell.

I've been doing it since February, some weeks more diligently than others. I tend to stick to the 600 calories when I'm working nights so two bowls of cereal and shed loads of coffee see me through it quite easily, and generally 1 or 2 lbs a week drops off. The main things for me are what I eat the rest of the week has a major effect, two days fasting can drop 6 lb off, and every now and then no matter what I do my weight stabilises for a couple of weeks before dropping again. So I've lost 28 lb since I started doing it in that lazy half arsed must have kebab or I'll die male way and it's worked.

I'm losing about 2lbs a week on the BHF diet. No fasting, no starving, just sensible eating. It's sustainable too.

The one big mistake (for me) in the past was weighing myself before I started and then counting the pounds as they came off. I would get all worked up during the no weight loss weeks and this lead to stress which eventually lead to "Oh sod it. If I haven't lost anything, why struggle. I will just go and eat whatever".
This time I have not weighed myself. Nor am I going to. This diet is a life changing regime and as such the weight will come off when it does. I have several (+++) stones to lose and that ain't going to happen anytime soon.
When I start to feel better, then I will know it is working.

Hi Jen, there is a big difference between Fasting and Starving, but if yours is working for you, then go for it.
A lot of the diets I have tried in the past, work extremely well for other people. But, not for me. At least not in the long term.
The 5:2 diet is not just about losing weight. There are other factors involved and although these are not as important to me at the moment, I can see a time in the future where they could be the number one factor in my continuing the diet long after I have achieved the weight loss. At the moment I have all the necessary motivation to give this diet a good go. But in the future I may need its other benefits to keep going.

But, not for me. At least not in the long term. I know, I was referencing diets I've tried where I was left completely starvingly hungry! It's absolutely no good in the long term (or, for me, more than 5 minutes!). I think the key is making it something you can do over a long period of time, sustainable. So heck, whatever works, eh?

I'm in my 4th week of 5:2, on top of the low carbing (more or less Atkins) I've been doing since last August (today being Day 318, I keep a food diary!). I'm low carbing for weight loss (5 stone off so far), and intermittent fasting for the health benefits. My fasting days are Mondays and Thursdays, and I tend to just have one meal on those days, as late in the day as I can bear it. The following day I leave it as long as possible before having 'breakfast' - usually until around noon - and that extends the fast. I'm finding it rather easy - low carbing and the consequent ketosis tends to reduce appetite (I only eat 2 meals a day the rest of the time), so one decent, low carb meal, under 500 cals, in a 24 hr period doesn't leave me ravenous. I have no idea whether it's helped with weight loss, because I've been away from scales since May 21st (will be back in The Land of Scales on Friday), but I'm actually enjoying it - I like the sense of control it gives me, and I seem to think more clearly on fasting days. I'll let you know as soon as I know whether it seems to have speeded up the loss - am within a stone of goal, so things have been going very slowly since around March - not that it bothers me, 'cos am planning to low carb and 5:2 for the forseeable future

Interesting thoughts Darkginger.
I had a salad for my evening meal, just because OH had already prepared it and whilst I enjoyed it, I am wishing now I hadn't had it. Although I am still well under the 600 cal of my Fast Day, I think I would have been happier with just my supplement drink.
Unfortunately we are out tomorrow so that would not be a good day to try again, but I will try on Friday to make it a truly Fast Day.

That Michael Mosley documentary was really interesting. After looking into the papers a bit more tho it was not a weighloss diet as such but the receptors it inhibits leads to a much faster regeneration of cells. This can actually work against you when trying to lose weight. If its not managed correctly the cells in the body get all confused and receptors can be damaged and "locked open" this can lead to many nasties in the body and increased weight gain, lowered serotonin pick up amongst others. All a bit laymens I know but I am at the end of a 7 in a row 13 hr night shits... sorry shifts. So Im not going to remember my uni training As with all weight loss diets there is only 3 things you need. Lower intake of calories, exercise (especially cardio vascular) and willpower. If you looking to trim up remember that muscle is heavier than fat and watching those scales if you working out to lose weight is a bad idea. You then need to objectively look at the problem areas (bum, tum, legs whatever you don't like) I have that problem with the wife at the moment. She has this target weight but she is doing kelltlsize and weights to try and shift it. Shes starting to look like she hulk but keeps crying that shes put on weight!!! Sometimes I despair I really do If you need any help give me a shout, I find anatomy, exersize and weight really interesting. Regards Jez
