........ I agree with Perps, thought, drivers with phones deserve some horrible punishment, it angers me every time I see it - it's so ridiculously dangerous and easily solved by just pulling over! Which, at times can itself be dangerous. It can be easily and cheaply and properly and legally (and safely?) solved by using a bluetooth earpiece. Personally, I think the same line should be taken with mobile phones, as is taken with uninsured vehicles - they should be taken away and crushed. In fact, should all mobile phones not be crushed? - bring back the carrier pigeon. At times, indeed, but not whilst you're doing 30 on a residential type street with plenty of parking, which is where I see the most of them! If it's dangerous to pull over and dangerous to be talking on your phone whilst driving (and some people are also eating ice creams so only have one finger on the wheel!!), then don't take the blinking phone call. It's never worth your life, or most especially not the people's lives you run over! I'd be up for the crushing punishment I barely use my phone, tbh, it's my alarm clock, Kindle reader, diary, email checker and map, but barely a phone

I work on a till in my local Co op, and I LOVE the phone users! We are obliged to ask each customer a series of questions, ie do they want a bag, have they a membership card etc etc etc, but after a while we tailor our questions depending on the customer and what they buy (we have a lot of regulars you see) And we also pack their shopping for them as well. Anyhoo, when an ignorant git arrives at my till with a phone glued to their ear and cant even be arsed to acknowledge me I make sure I ask EVERY question, and will repeat them till they're replied to and I deliberately take my time packing their bag! Infantile? You bet, but I gotta get my jollies where I can

I'm old fashioned and I was bought up to believe that people are more important than things. If I'm in the middle of a personal transaction (where I'm dealing with another human being) and my mobile rings I deal with the person first and the machine takes second place. That's simply common courtesy. Of course I'm old, and I cannot understand all these people who seem to need a mobile in the same way as a fighter pilot needs his head up display - they seem incapable of walking down the street without some sort of electronic assistance! I do a responsible job, and I sometimes get important calls on my mobile - generally about 2 per year.... Everybody else has much more important/eventful life than me - they constantly get urgent and vital calls that they simply must take no matter what the circumstances! I don't envy them though

Heh, oldsmokey, I'm self-employed so taking work calls = money which in turn = money to spend in the shop I'm in

Just how many times have we walked into a corner shop and the person on the till is on the phone and doesn't even stop to say hi or bye to you. You just go in, put your paper or what ever in front of them, they quickly say how much and then take your money and give your change. It annoys them when you ask them for something behind the till like a phone top up or a lottery ticket or the best 1... a gas or electric top up because they have to actaully talk to you and get off there arse to do the machine thing.

I don't answer the phone unless it's the wife but I frequently browse the web, text or play games while sat on the throne! I dare say I have even posted on here while pushing one out before now too lol When I had my waterproof phone I used to watch tv in the bath and go on the net and at 1st even made phonecalls to show it off lol

I do get a lot of calls due to my work nature when I am out. But I do ensure that I do not disturb anyone around me which I assume should be basic common courtesy. I have got calls when I am on line for Tesco. I just move out of line letting the person behind me go ahead and take the call. If the person at the till has already started serving me I just let the call go to voice mail and call them back after the purchase (which is usually 3 - 4 minute) So I personally agree with the person at the till in the story. I just hope that she does not lose her job for doing the right thing. Some people do not have a clue about phone etiquettes Nice read, shamreez, if only all people were respectful & courteous like you! But they're not! I won't comment on my thoughts when somebody makes/takes a call in a restaurant or texts at the dinner table.

Id walk out without purchasing anything. Courtesy works both ways.

I won't comment on my thoughts when somebody makes/takes a call in a restaurant or texts at the dinner table. I will I was a restaurant manager for 8 years - it is totally against any rule of civility to use a phone when dining. I had my staff trained to not go near anyone phone fiddling and I would deal with them. I would basically ask them to turn their phone to silent or preferably off so they would not disturb other diners.

This subject is such a pet hate of mine. I rarely get phone calls in my supermarket as you can't get a signal inside! But even if I did I wouldn't answer it. Because I'm in a chair I HAVE to have my wits about me so I don't run people over or cause an obstruction. It's just a shame most other people don't offer ME the same respect. Only the other night at the Robbie Williams concert was a prime example of mass rudeness and inconsiderate people. When the concert had finished everyone was making their way out. I told my daughter to walk behind me so that people could see I was approaching in my electric chair therefore avoiding me bashing into or hurting anyone. I really shouldn't have bothered showing that much respect for others. THEY (and I mean a good 80%)all had phones glued to ears charging towards or across me totally unaware of my existence. I got so frightened at one point I just stopped where I was as I couldn't move forward without hitting someone. Thankfully, a member of staff noticed what was happening and rushed over to help me. She called other staff members over to halt the sea of phone users so we could get to the disabled lifts down to the car park. What made me angry more than anything was the fact that most of them were just bragging to people about what they had seen!! FFS! Can it not wait till you get to your car or train? Or at the very least concentrate on where you are walking and your surroundings. Oh! And even worse than all that. On our way to the concert on the M25 I witnessed 2 big truck drivers with mobiles glued to their ears doing about 80 miles an hour!

If I'm not careful I'll get on my soap box about manners in general Dolly . . . there's a distinct lack on occasions in today's modern life it seems. As my Father is fond of saying, manners maketh a man and cost nothing. Mind you, my parents won't even have an ansaphone . . . let alone a mobile, I gave them one of my old mobiles with a PAYG sim card in it for emergencies. Mother used the credit up in one call and then they were both horrified at the ' top up ' cost so never bothered. I haven't tried again.

My gran who adopted me, used to say the exact same thing as your dad, and god help me and my sister if we ever forgot our manners as children
