In the interest of telephonic science, I recently carried out a short but conclusive piece of research in the name of courtesy and manners. I was aware that when calling a work colleague of mine on my iPhone (he has one too), I was suddenly aware of myself shouting down the phone. We called each other in turns, gradually reducing the volume of our voice (we are musicians, we are good at this!), and realised that we could speak to each other in a very quiet voice without losing the ability to understand each other. OK, iPhones have a special noice-cancelling facility, but nevertheless we were surprised just how quietly we could talk and still hear each other. A lesson to all who shout down their phones. On a general note, I ignore anyone with a phone. If the call is important, and they sometines are, then I am surplus to the situation, and if they are talking to me and start texting, I will remain silent until they ask me why I am quiet, when I will inform them that their text is obviously more important than our conversation. Amazing how this makes them realise that we are actually having a face-to-face interface which is far more satisfying than a telephonic one! Andy

This is a real bug bear for me, as im a shop assistant i get this all the time. Its so rude, they come up to the till still talking on their phone, without a thank you and just walk off That's just an illustration of the fact that most people aren't capable of multi-tasking in any real sense and those are the very ones who think it's perfectly safe to be piloting a ton of metal down the road while gabbing to their mates/kids/rellies on their infernal device. It's just rude when in social interactions (even shopping) and it's nothing short of bloody dangerous on the road. It can be easily and cheaply and properly and legally (and safely?) solved by using a bluetooth earpiece. Well, no; as I said above, very few people can actually do it, headpiece or not. Apart from that, a Bluetooth earpiece makes you look like a cock.

Scounered (Scottish word) I was talking to my friend/neighbour whose dog I'm looking after next weekend. She was sitting in her garden so I dropped in while walking my dog. I asked her about her family and how were things going with some of the problems she had at the moment. She asked me how I was, so I started to tell her just as her mobile rang. She took the call, it was her boyfriend, no problem just for a chat. I left

Karma, will you have time at the weekend to teach their dog some 'bad manners'... such as grabbing the phone when it rings and burying it!

Even the Romans, the Greeks, and probably the middle-aged inhabitants of Ur, were complaining about the young wans "they don't show respect, they draw rude graffitt, they cheek us, whatever are we going to do"?
