As this is a very current topic being debated in Parliament at the present time, I have submitted my vote via a petition which was begun by the Independent Newspaper. I am not going to comment futher, other than to say that I feel quite distressed (if not sickened) at 'guessing' what 3 tigers went through in order for them to sit in a row on a circus stand, on their bums, with front paws up in the air. How manageable would that be with one domestic cat, let alone 3 wild cats? ? > > > > > > > Sorry for my rant, but if anyone feels the same - here is the petition. Over to you as to whether you agree and wish to sign. www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/circusanimalsHugs xx

I have signed. After going to a circus that has animals a few years ago and being utterly heartbroken for the poor animals, I will do anything I can to stop the use of animals in circuses.

Signed Hanow . . . I remember seeing the video footage of that elephant ( Annie? ) being mistreated by her handler. > Thank goodness she is now being cared for properly. There's no need for circus animals in this day and age, the remaining animals should be rehomed in zoos that are able to cater for their needs . . . although I did hear a comment on the news that some would find it difficult to adapt from circus to zoo life. Handled correctly, I don't see why this should be so?

It was the circus where they had Anne that I went to. She has now been re-homed at Longleat safari park but away from public view in peaceful retirement. Animals are not there for our entertainment!

Annie - the elephant - was taken to Longleat in March (I think it was.) I went there in April - my birthday present from my offspring. They organised a private safari for me, and our guide was one of the rangers whom we see on Animal Safari (with Ben wotsisname). I asked him about Annie as we were driving around. He pointed out where she was housed, but said that the staff were very much operating with Annie's needs as a priority, thus she went outside when SHE wanted to. But, bless her, she was so used to being chained, or incarcerated, it was taking her some time to appreciate that she was now 'free' to roam outside - to enjoy the sunshine, to mud-bath etc. It was awful to hear how she had been treated, as well as then hearing how difficult it was for her to now adjust to true care and freedom.

Thanks Netty- I am carp with social network sites! :-[ But certainly, the more the merrier. I spent some years transcribing for the courts, and on occasion transcribed cases brought by the RSPCA. I would finish up in tears hearing the evidence given regarding what had happened to the animals - everything from dogs, cats, sheep etc. But what always ticked me off was hearing the sentence handed down at the end! They would barely cause a dent in the life of the abuser. It really disgusted me that our country and judicial system doesn't make animal abuse so unacceptable that real deterrent sentences are handed down. A smack on the wrist does little to inhibit them. > > > Whilst I appreciate that we are safe from rabies in this country, due to legislation - our quarantine laws are so archaic. My two brought back from Thailand had to spend 6 months living in a space 8' x 20'. And that was generous. The pens of the quarantine station near Heathrow are 5 x 12!!!!! They are not allowed out of that space for a walk, a run or anything else. Really heart-breaking. But - and this is how stupid the law is - the outide pens are open to any wildlife that may visit their pen: rats, mice, foxes whatever. So, if the animal did have rabies (and in 80 years, no animal imported has even been found to have it) then the mice, rats, 'whatever' visiting would head off into freedom with the virus! Meanwhile, quarantined animal is stuck there - not even allowed to have a romp in a larger area. > > >

""In an act of desperation, Conservative whips had warned they would impose the most serious parliamentary voting sanction, a three-line whip, to bring recalcitrant backbenchers to heel and get them to support the Government's alternative proposal of a licensing system. But in a victory for The Independent's campaign for a ban and for the long campaigns waged by animal welfare organisations, Downing Street backed down when it became apparent that it would lose the vote despite what backbenchers described as "desperate" measures. One of the three MPs who brought the cross-party motion for a ban disclosed that he had first been offered a government job – and then threatened that the Prime Minister would look "very dimly" on his recalcitrance – unless he amended or withdrew the motion."" FROM www.independent.co.uk/environment/nature/victory-in-the-campaign-to-ban-circus-animals-2302073.htmlA whip is an official in a political party whose primary purpose is to ensure party discipline in a legislature. Whips are party 'enforcers', who typically offer inducements and threaten punishments for party members to ensure that they vote according to the official party policy. A whip's role is also to ensure that the elected representatives of their party are in attendance when important votes are taken. The usage comes from the hunting term whipping in, i.e. preventing hounds from wandering away from the pack. FROM WIKI

Haha, yeah the whips also use blackmail and bribery to make the MP's vote the way the cabinet members want them to.

"Animals are what the owner makes them" just make sure you take them words very seriously.A dog doesn't attack for no reason a cat doest scourer away for no reason an elephant never forgets so bulds up the frame of what his abuser looks like and will stay for them forever. This is why an elephant would attack a human. As it sees you as a threat. In my own lil world of laws any one who abuses an animal should be put inside for manslaughter or abuse as you dont really see much of this happen. All ive ever seen is either a ban or a fine in some of the cases ive read and tbh it disgusts me.So i have singed the petition you dont need animals in a circus to give you an entertainment value at all. "Animals are what the owner makes them"
