Apologies for hijacking this thread with my own questions, but it seemed pointless starting another on exactly the same topic. I've just read through all the advice offered here with great interest, as I've just bought an RSST, and I am a complete genesis noob. I haven't bought any extra materials yet, but it sounds like .20 Kanthal, 400 mesh, and 2mm rope is a good place to start. However, I still have a few stupid beginner questions, and would be grateful for advice on the following:
- Aside from the difference in the strength of the rope, does it make any real difference whether you use 7x7 or 7x19?
- I've never used Kanthal before (the only thing I've rebuilt is my Clockworks RDA and for that I use nichrome). I gather that there's a difference between Kanthal D and Kanthal A1 in terms of their maximum temperature, but am I right in thinking this doesn't really matter for vaping purposes? (Or is there one type that vapers tend to use?)
- I just watched Todd's vid on the RSST, and he opts to use Kanthal ribbon. Should I stick with wire to begin with, until I get the hang of it?
- Can anyone recommend a video in which someone builds an RSST using a method that is identical (or near as dammit) to the method that dc84 is recommending in this thread? (If not, no worries, the instructions he's posted seem pretty clear and I think I know what I need to do).

Never personally tried the other rope but I woukd assume that it would wick faster due to more strands.. A1 just seems to be the preference to be honest.. Ribbon works well as it gives slightly more coverage of the wick but you need to twist it at the terminals to sit under the screws.. .20 is just so simple to use and the taste difference is minimal at best.. so for hassle alone I preferred the round wire as you dont need to worry about kinks or twists.. My method was born out of experimentation and as far as I know there isn't any videos to show it..

Let us know how you get on Well, I've just realised that tazmania only lives a couple of miles up the road from me, so if it all goes badly wrong, I suppose I could just track him down and stand outside his house and refuse to leave until I'm given a hands-on rebuilding tutorial.

Might need to give him some time though as I have a feeling he will be using the wick I made him for a while yet!!

That's something else I'm not sure about. How long does a mesh wick usually last? I'm used to getting about a week or so from my silica wicks before they start to taste a bit off. What's usual for a mesh wick?
