Hi all
With all the parts I've seen available I've been thinking about having a go at making a mod of my own.
The thing is, I really like using my VV USB passthrough indoors when I'm at my computer... but these don't seem to last me long. I've been through 3 since I started vaping at the beginning of Feb.
Would any of you experienced builders know how easy it would be to build a VV mod that has no battery of it's own, but a socket to plug a 6v mains adaptor etc into?
I'm not even sure, maybe something is already available?
Thanks
Steve

For a 2ohm atty, you would need a 6v supply that could kick out 3 amps. For a 1 ohm atty, the supply would have to provide 6 amps Personally, I don't get how passthroughs can really work when connected to a computer. USB spec is 500ma, which is nowwhere near enough to power a PV - but I'm no electrical engineer - just kind of remember ohms law from some time back (maybe ohms law is updated for the new millenium? )

Thank you guys testdruif - that looks good to me. Can you tell me if I wanted to buy a vv board, and instead of connecting it to a battery the power was delivered by a mains adaptor (like the phones used or cordless phones etc) could that be made to work? Cutting out USB altogether I mean?

OK - so that board is rated at 1a @ 5v = 5W Methinks it won't vape well Also, to quote a reply from the tutorial you linked to:

Cutting out USB altogether I mean? Buy one of these Input voltage = 5V so it will be enough to power the board www.stealthvape.co.uk/electronic-cigarette-mod-parts/variable-voltage-boards/lm2596-red

testdruifAs I said, i'm no electrical engineer, but as far as I'm aware, it doesn't matter how much current you throw at that board, it will still only output 5V @ 1a.

Then I really wonder what they put into those usb only passthrough thingies as they only operate via usb (computer or charger) and work just fine

If my logic (& I'm no Vulcan) is correct, you could theoretically run it out? But are there devices available as "passthrough-only" (ie no battery)? On a computer that adheres to the USB spec, such a device would be limited to 5v @ 0.5a - thus producing only 2.5W? Maybe raid2506, Mev, or markm (sure he used to have mod-maker status) could shed some light?

The battery passthrough type are not actually passthrough, they use the battery to power the unit but if plugged in the battery can be charging at the same time.

I have made plenty of PT mods which run direct from PC USB out.
A straight connection of USB +/- to the 510 connection will give you 5v and I run my own PT's at that. It's a bit high for some folks though.
You won't get them to work as VV though, you will want a 2a minimum which you can get from a USB mains hub.
A simple resistor bridge or diode chain down to 3.8v still needs the bigger amps.

Then I really wonder what they put into those usb only passthrough thingies as they only operate via usb (computer or charger) and work just fine A commercial USB PT charges the battery at about 5v and 420mah and you draw power from the battery as normal. They are not true PT's though, more like a trickle charger. If you chain vaped constantly for about 20 hours you could deplete the battery and would then have to wait for it to charge.
