Got my delivery today, many thanks Dee. This should keep me going for a bit.

Found this supplier as well that may have what we need in terms of wicking material. It needs a bit of research though.

This is the one that I'm trying with now Lee, I sent him a sample of the wick. Just about to phone him as I've not heard anything

Silica wick or rope is usually coated in a chemical to allow for easier handling (stops it breaking apart). This burns off, unless you have burnt it off initially (which is probably a good idea), and it would certainly account for that taste.
