Nic mg confusion !!!

Was wondering how to work this out ..... Currently using 12mg , was using 24 initially but. Just thinking if a cig has eg 2mg it's easy to work out ie 20 equates to 40 mg a day , when using patches eg 24 or 14 that how much you get in 24 hours .... So how does it work with liquid ????? Confused

With e-liquid, the rating is mg/ml
so for example a 10ml bottle of 12mg is 120mg total

It's hard to tell mate, since the absorption rate of nicotine is different for patches, smoking and vaping. But if you wanted to know how many mg you are vaping a day you work out how many ml you vape and at what strength. E.g. I vape about 3ml of 16ish mg per day meaning I vape 48mg in a day. How much of that enters my bloodstream, and how fast it gets there is where the differences lie between vaping and other forms of nicotine.

I also remember reading an approximation to cigs smoked would be total mls vaped in a day multipled by the mg then divide by 3.5
I vape around 3-4ml a day of 2mg liquid so that would be
4ml x 2mg = 8mg
8mg / 3.5 = 2.28 cigs (approx.)

Pyr0 is right so if you vape 3mls of your 12mg strength eliquid a day that is 36 mg in total

The mg strength is out of a thousand, so 18mg strength converted to a percentage is 1.8%, so in a 10ml bottle of eliquid there is actually only 0.18ml of nicotine in that 10ml of liquid, & the blood absorbtion rate is about 50/60% of what we used to get from a ciggie.

But the simple answer is there is no exact figure, I think this is the most recent study from Dr Farsalinos but even this doesn't give any absorption rates only consumption rates, & note when they talk about nicotine they are talking about the whole liquid not just the percentage of nicotine in the liquid, as there would only be 2ml or 2% of pure nicotine in 10ml of 20mg liquid strength.

Now, however, we are a step closer to knowing exactly how much nicotine we do get from e-cigarettes. Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos and colleagues have just published their in-depth study (full text) which analysed 45 experienced e-cigarette users and 35 smoking controls. They looked at several measures, including the puff duration and number of puffs taken over a given time-frame from users puffing on a eg0/tank setup. They found that, using the 9mg/ml liquid provided in the test, vapers were consuming around .5mg of nicotine in 5 minutes, and 1.6mg over 20 minutes.

Scaling this figure up to a 20mg solution (as used by many vapers), Farsalinos concludes that 1mg per 5 mins, and 4 mg per 20 mins of nicotine would be consumed. In other words, then, this puts somewhat paid to the notion that e-cigs do not provide substantial amounts of nicotine to the user. But it does more than that – in establishing a precise figure for the amount of nicotine delivered to the user, it flatly contradicts the European Commission Tobacco Product Directive that 4mg/ml liquids are equivalent to NRT.

It is impossible to equate the nic levels shown on cig packets to nic juice concentrations.
You are comparing apples to coconuts and trying to bake a cake with the mix.
With ecigs you vape all the juice but most of a cigarette burns away on its own.
Each smoker is getting a different amount of the nicotine available from the cigs.
Unless you light up and have a number of blood tests done as you smoke
There isn't way for youto make a direct comparison.

Thanks guys that makes perfect sense il now try to work out how many mg I vaping !! Sure it's more than I smoked !!!

The ml is the volume/amount the mg is the strength it doesn't matter how much you vape it doesn't increase the strength of the liquid but it obviously will increase how much nicotine you take in, the amount of nicotine in 3ml of 12mg is 0.036ml of nic.

You will never know, while you can calculate how much nicotine was in the liquid 
you vaped you will never know how much nicotine you got from a cigarette.

What we can say is that a smoker/vaper self regulates. If the levels in your blood drop
then you smoke or vape more, and if they are high then less.
we all have our own tolerance level.
The good news is that it will do you no physical damage whatever your preferred level may be.
pin short, it's not worth worrying about.

That would be you & me both then these days I just use a 1 - 1 conversion since my keyboard doesn't even have a euro symbol, although google is my friend for all things conversion (& spelling)

& to be fair re nic levels it's all as clear as mud, markm has it right we all self administer what we need which is why one peep can OD on 12mg & another can chug away at 36mg, as long as the OP isn't getting any OD symptoms then lovely jubbly.


EDIT - Should also apologise if I came across as a bit school mamish but I am conscious that this is on a public part of the forum & open to google search. The Antz would have a field day if they thought we were all chugging our way through 120mg  & as we get closer to the plenary vote in October some dirty so & so’s will use whatever they can to discredit vaping, even if it is physically impossible

Hmmmm, '12mg' is '12mg/ml' so it's 36mg. While we don't measure solids in litres the density of nicotine is 1.01 g/cm³ so it's 0.03636cm³, which is the same volume as 0.03636ml, as you say.

Why would anyone want to know the physical volume of nicotine though?

It has a very real importance in the argument about medicinalising Ecigs/Liquid since the current recommendation is that anything over 4mg would be a medicine, & a lot of peeps, specially none vapers don't understand how the nicotine is actually quantified, they think the mg amount is the actual amount of pure nicotine we'er using.
