Can't get this bloody coiling thing right

I use .2 Kanthal and either 3mm silica or more recently 2mm Ekowool, and this works well for my Protank heads too. I don't bother using flavour wicks after a suggestion from Super-Shiny, and this hasn't seemed to have made any noticeable difference.
I also got a bit frustrated at first, but with the reassurance and encouragement I received from this forum, I persevered and can now recoil a Protank head in about 3 minutes with an 85% success rate - and that figure is improving all the time as I pick up tips and tricks from the more experienced recoilers here.
Don't get despondent, and keep on trying. All of a sudden it will all fall into place and you'll be well away

taz96 - don't read about it, treat yourself to some .2 Kanthal and 2mm Ekowool - total cost inc. delivery about a fiver! - and try some recoils out; it's the best way to learn, and you can always take a picture and post it here so we can help you improve your technique.
Give it a try - you've only a fiver to lose, and much more to gain in the long run!!

EDIT: let us know what you are intending to recoil first, and we can advise if the materials quoted above are the most suitable. Clearos for example prefer 2 strands of much smaller silica wick, etc.

Thanks chykensa. I have some .2 Kanthal and some 2mm silica. I also got a freebie of some sort, but no name on it it . I think it might be Ekowool. I seem to manage to coil "ok", test and they read somewhere between 1.8-2.2 ohms. BUT..lol when juiced up, they don't seem to work. Sorry I shouldn't be hijacking someone else's thread.

fORGOT TO Add, trying to recoil evods, protanks and latest is Igo L. Igo L just flooded, very little vape and no flavour. As I said earlier.."running before I can walk" methinks.

The main mistake i made when first coiling was wrapping the coil to tight around the wick. This then strangles the wick and not enough juice can get to the coil.
Do you use a pin along the wick when you wrap the wire round?

try this ,coil 3 wraps,then put on a battery[ego fine]not a vv/vw with low ohm cut out, drip bit of juice fire it,repeat 3 times,see if ohms rise

Ah ha ! Now see that's not summat I thought of. I stupidly assumed the coil had to be fairly tight.

The whole coil should be touching the wick and the wick should not move in the coil. But as Roscopecotrain says don't get it to tight otherwise it will taste like you are burning the wick as no juice is getting in

jordan I'm in the same boat as you - I just can't get on with .3 kanthal. It gets so damn hot and just retains the heat.
I've gone back to using .2 kanthal and 2mm silica - that suits me fine

I did my first micro coil with cotton on my protank 1 yesterday think I did 7-9 wraps of 0.2 using a small screw driver to wrap round, the I fed the cotton through after twisting the end a bit.
Currently showing 3.1ohms on my Vamo, it started on 2.6 but went up as I used it but has stayed there now. It's higher than I wanted but waiting on a delivery of 0.3 and decided to try. Tonnes of vapour, flavour is good.
It was a little more fiddly than my normal double silica and 4-5 wraps buildbut I'm enjoying it:-)
I used cotton wool balls to make the wick.

I use a medium sewing needle to wrap around. Seems to do the job for me, and easy to slip out once the coil is made. 4-5 wraps of .2 Kanthal gives me about 1.8-2ohms, that's close enough for me! I'm not fussy about getting it exact and as long as it fires on my Vamo it's good to go!
I used 3mm silica wick for my Nova heads, but now I'm using Protanks, I use 2mm Ekowool and that works great at 5 wraps to give me about 2.2ohms.
It's all trial and error to start with, just imagine how pleased you will be when you vape your first homemade coil!!

Thanks for all the input guys. I had another go at recoiling my protank with the .3 kanthal. Got it to 1 ohm and it looks quite neat and tidy. Won't fire on my Vamo but I got my kato popular 2 through the post this morning so I stuck it on there and it hits like a truck =o Clouds of vapour and a nicotine rush to go with it =D
