Hi,
I have a Nimbus & a Phoenix atty, I buy premade wicks & coils from VB.
I dual coil both, and never have a problem, flavour is good.Vapour is awesome.
So,I decided to take the plunge, and bought 2mm Ekowool & 0.2 Kanthal.
Firstly, I wrap the Ekowool in a loop, then wrap the coils around it, I wondered if the coils are too tight, or the coils are too far apart??
I tried 4 wraps, & then later. 3 wraps,(dual coil) but when I fire my K100, the coils glow red intermittently, and there isnt a lot of vapour.,also there is no hissing sound when I fire the mod up.
After a while, I dont get any vapour, & the battery is drained. - the mod at the base of the atty is hot. then I connect an EGO C battery, and the battery light flashes on & off.
When I connect another atty Iclear 30 to the K100, I hear the hissing, everything works normal.
Is there any seller who sells premade Kanthal coils with ekowool??,(ie a better quality than VB)
Hope somebody can provide an explanation, where I am going wrong.
Cheers
Mike

Technicals are not my forte Mike, so I'm most likely completely wrong . . . but I wonder if you could have a short?

Sounds like a short but I'm inept and couldn't get premade coils to run reliably in an igo or recoiling a protank head so I'm not really the right person to comment either. Paging Super-Shiny to the thread

Super-Shiny's your man, and is no doubt rushing from his newly-marital bed to answer the summons above, but in the meantime I concur with my friends above - sounds like you have a short somewhere. I have only ever recoiled Protanks and Nova heads, with the ridiculously easy IGO-L and a (rather unsuccessful) AGA-T having the occasional look-in. Are you using a needle or straightened paperclip to wind your coils around? This means you can still give the wraps some tension, and when you slide the needle out it gives the wick room to expand and fill the coil. Something else which might be worth considering - 'pulse' the new coil, starting at a low voltage, and gradually working up in 2-second pulses, giving the coil time to bed in. I haven't heard of anyone selling Ekowool premade coils, but to be honest with you, it would be well worth the time and small expenditure to persevere with the recoiling, as it will still save you £££s, and there is nothing more satisfying than vaping on a freshly made home-spun coil! I'll now stand aside and wait for Romelee to correct me and add some more expert information to this thread!!

If the coils are glowing red when you have juice on the wick you've wound them too loose, not too tight. The red glow means that the wire is sitting in air not in juice

Are the coils glowing red with juice on the wick? Do you have any pics?
3 wraps of .2 kanthal around 2mm silica will come in at around 1ohm if you have them both like this you are vaping at 0.5ohm on a dual coil set up so you may want to bare that in mind.

Hi Ginge, Firstly, I fire up the coils, before any juice is applied, to see if it fires the coils evenly. It fires, then 3 seconds later, i try to fire it again , there is nothing, only when i hold the fire button, there is minimal heat.,& hardly any hissing sound. I checked if the coils are close to the posts, they arent - I put a screwdriver to prise them away, also I make sure the coils arent touching the floor of the atty. Sorry, I dont have any pics, I binned the coil, used the premade coils from VB - no problems at all.

Due to the risk of sending a battery into meldown resulting in venting and possibly flames I would highly recommend resistance checking of any hand made/fitted coils prior to pressing the button on any battery. the fact that your battery is getting hot is a clear indicator that you are overloading it. Do you know what safe resistance your battery can cope with? if not then you need to check this before playing with coils on a mech mod.

sounds very much like low ohm, prob hitting around 0.8 to 1.1 which is why its getting hot quick and killing the battery, try using just a single coil ,also for dual think you would need 2.5 kanthal, when you assemble coil give it a few quick pulses with juice dribbled on it,sometimes this will help bed coil and up the ohm a bit ,before you use it
