Hi any gamers out there? My lad is complaining about his display and wants a gaming HDMI cable for connection to his TV. I don't think that would make much difference, but as Christmas is coming up, perhaps he needs a computer type monitor?
As a cable is about a fiver and a display about £100 quid any advice would be great.

@secretsquirrel as far as i can remember when i changed over from your basic Scart too HDMI the difference was very very noticeable, try the fiver option first.

If his tv already has hdmi in but he is using composite (single yellow rca plug) or scart, then and hdmi cable will make a massive difference as Romelee said. You won't find much out there for £100 for a reasonable HD monitor or lcd tv though unless you buy second hand

Thought that's what you meant. That's rubbish. There are a lot of people trying to profit from 'premium HDMI cables'. It's bullshit. A digital signal is all or nothing. I you can see the picture (without obvious blocky artifacts) you don't need another cable.

What is he currently using out of interest?
I recently picked up a perfectly decent, 720p 26" TV off ebay for £40, I could have gotten more for my money but I limited myself to within 20mi of my postcode.. I use it as a normal TV, and when I want to watch films that I've <legitimately acquired> I just run an HDMI lead from the back of the computer to the TV instead of my monitor. Although that said being "only" 720p I don't use it for games, but for films & TV it's fine.
For gaming you're normally pretty close to the screen certainly way closer than traditional "home cinema" type useage, so a giganto-screen seems a touch overkill to me (anything approaching 32" etc..) - My 19" PC monitor (higher res than the TV but smaller in inches) was £90 brand new, I know thick end of £100 isn't cheap by any standard but I shouldn't think you'd struggle at that kind of price for summat decent?
A 1080p monitor (1920x1080 res) around the 19-21" size would be more than sufficient for console gaming I would have thought?

Cable wise there is no upgrade - a £2 poundland hdmi cable will give the same result as a £50 gold plated one - that's the beauty of digital signals - no decay through transmission.
Display now that's a whole different kettle of fish - refresh rates and lag (time lapse between you pressing a button on the controller and the action happening) are critical for gaming and cheap displays will cause issues with both.
I have a pair of Panasonic plasmas in our lounge and conservatory (my games room) which are used for gaming and they are a miles apart from the cheap LCD telly we have in out bedroom that I occasionally hook the PS3 up to

Top end LCD's have caught up and surpassed plasma now in terms of picture quality. Lag and refresh rates (due to the image processor and physical lcd switching time) are almost non-existent now. I'd go so far to say the picture is way superior on many high end LCD panels, not to mention lower power requirements and thinner, lighter bodies. So much so that Panasonic are stopping making them: www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24458805Cheap displays are poor in comparison, but generally if you go for a known name and a display that's in the current line, you won't go far wrong. But then you can expect to pay £300+. LG and Samsung make great displays. Buy an unknown cheap supermarket brand and you will be getting very old technology. I use professional Panasonic plasmas, other brand LCD's and screens that you won't have heard of before regularly in my work but I'm still using a 5 or 6 year old sharp screen at home and hate it… Here is a 35 screen wall I worked on last weekend (NEC 46" plasmas) Building: you can see the black level is very poor on the ones that were on, but the white ones in the top were nice and bright: The final complete thing (took 15 hours to do):
