+1 for Skylanders here. have a 9 year old, going on 10, and all he and his friends talk about right now is Skylanders. (And Doctor Who) Though we're now on the 3rd version I believe, Skylanders swapforce. The starter set is around £50 - £60 which includes the game, portal and figures. That's Skylanders Swapforce, the new one. If buying the starter kit you'll need to know which games console he owns. He may already have the starter kit, for an older version, or he may be getting the new version this year, ask his parents. If so you can pick up figures for it, ranging from around a tenner for a single figure, to twenty something for a multipack. With the figures, it doesn't matter which games console he's got, but it will matter which version of Skylanders he has. Skylanders - Spyro's Adventure, Skylanders - Giants, or the new Skylanders - Swapforce. Each figure unlocks another playable character in the game. To be honest it's the most incredible money maker. Sell a game, then make people buy physical figures to unlock parts of the game. Which is why Disney are trying to copy it. But it is fantastic fun, and the kids do love it. Sorry if this was all too confusing. My intention was to be helpful

Moggy may be right about the remote control car. It works OK on carpet & wood floor, but if you took it outside & gave it a good run at a hard object it would probably break. I'd tell you more, but my GS says I've played with it enough. Dylan has had plenty of RC Cars , and the only one that was any good was the Lightning McQueen one sold when "Cars" was first out. We scored one during a sale day in the Disney store for a reasonable price. ALL the others were given with the best of intentions, but sadly a waste of money. Ah - my link was to a Lightning McQueen one, so maybe OK.

Blownupdolly if he has a console then pop into your local Game store and buy some pre-owned games, shop around in there and you could possibly get 4 or 5 really good games

I'd ask his mum what he wants. They're always after something. I have a lot of younger cousins to buy for and only one I always know what to get because we're really close. The others I just ask their parents what they've mentioned. There's always something.

If he has a games console, xbox, ps3 etc. You won't go wrong with a games voucher, or second hand games ( need to check with his mum first which one he has.) If he has a mini ipad or listens to his music, then he will be very happy with an iTunes voucher. I have 6 grandsons all have been very happy with the above. My 10 year old this year has xbox headphones so he can play minecraft and talk to his friends as he plays...was £15 I think

Well, it seems he has a PS3 but isn't into Skylanders. Shame, as I wasted an hour looking at different stuff lol!
I think the games vouchers would be good as he can pick what he wants. I really am such a dunce with all this stuff. No idea about it at all. The last time I played a games console it was the kids Sega Megadrive and sonic the hedgehog was the rage lol.

My 10 year old and 11 year old grandsons aren't into them either. The 7 and 8 year olds are though...lot depends on whether they are young or mature for their age. A games voucher is ideal..hope he likes it ...I know he will

I'd get him some fruit flavour juice, bit young for tobacco ones yet, and keep it low mg, you know what kids are for getting buzzed off sugar or nicoteen. Don't let the daily mail see this post lol. MP

Blownupdolly I like educational stuff for kids that's hands on aswell. ron 's link is a good little idea something that makes them think. Toys 'r' Us have a few science and education products. My local store has an aisle dedicated to that sort of thing.
