I have visited Hobbyking many times archiecat but not comfortable with Lipo batteries, i know if used correctly they are fine but it's just me. If you want have some Lipo batteries here that i don't need, not even been out the box, you can have them if you want if you just pay the P+P. EDIT: Forgot to add, it is 2 x these : www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=34562

Hi SS, I know there are concerns arround Lipo's and I respect yours. I've been useing them for a few years now in my toys with no prob's, having said that I treat them with due respect.
Thanks for the kind offer but i've loads off the things.
Did you sell the last mod you built? really liked the transparent face you put on it.

Looking forward to this, your last build was very impressive. I do radio controlled model ( read toy ) aircraft and buy a lot of stuff from Hobbyking they do a huge range of lipo batt's at very low prices might be worth a look if space is a premium concern. link30 watts ? ffs! Second the hobbyking recommendation, they also do some decent small tools etc been buying from them for a few years now and they now have a uk warehouse so no customs issues and quicker delivery than hk cheers richie ps rc stuff are not toys they are miniature engineering marvels lol (2 450 helis 5 planes and 3 cars;) )

should get yourself a little soldering station mate, they're well worth it, the cheaper soldering irons don't last two minutes. Well it lasted less than what you said, lasted around 50 seconds before it went into meltdown It was like a lightsaber, could cut things in half with it, it was so hot.....in the bin that went and ordered one of those you linked, it's been dispatched and should have it by Saturday or Monday the latest.

LoL... hoping you have better luck with this one, i've been very happy with them. I've used mine constantly about 3/4 hours per day for about 8 months without a problem so I would think it'll be just great. lol

Mev any tips on using it, i.e are they buttons on the front and what are they for? Looking to just use it for the DNA board and joining 20 and 24 awg wires, would you recommend 20watts? if so what is that in Celsius on that station. It all just goes over my head all this heat thingy mijig Funny thing i was watching this video when it went into meltdown:

They're just for heat adjustments, there is 3 temps already dialled in 200,300 + 400 but you can dial in different if you wanted and save that as a preset, tbh I've always found it easy to just leave it on full (400c) and use a fine tip for working on pcb's such as the dna20, if I was working on something bigger like soldering the croc clips like I do then I would leave the heat setting the same but use a larger tip. To me this is far better than trying to adjust the temp via the buttons as a lot depends on the tip you're using. I also prefer using the chisel type tips and find the pointed ones useless, I'll dig out the link to them too for you that fit that iron.
My actual method of soldering on pcb's is a little different to the standard but works much better for me and is a lot less hassle therefore quicker too... i'll spot some solder onto the pcb first onto the joins where the wires will be going, i'll then tin the wires i'm using with some solder making sure not to put a lot on making it harder to get the wires through the holes, then while holding the pcb in a stand just heat the solder on the pcb while pushing the wire through into place. This makes brilliant joints and means you're not having to hold the wire in place with a clip or whatever while soldering and it's much quicker. I do have a tin of flu handy at all times and dip the wire ends into it when tinning them first. This is certainly the method I would use for the dna and it's what I use for all the boards on the zappers I make. I've got a dna20 here which I keep going to make a mod with myself but never get around to.. one day I will lol
EDIT: just seen the video you've added after writing this, i'd never use a file or sandpaper to clean up a tip. Most are made of copper and coated so using a file would only damage the coating making it last less time. I've got a small tin of a substance used for cleaning up your tips i'll see if I can dig out the link for that too, you only need to do it every so often. I do mine every monday morning by habit now but like I said before I am using my iron/tip a lot so for the occasional user once per month would probably be ok.

Mev tried tinning the wires before putting into the DNA and that was a no go, it's a massive nightmare even getting the bare wires of 20 AWG into the holes on the DNA board, 24 AWG is not so bad but still tight. The holes are so minute and very difficult to get the wires in there, the only way i get them in there is to twist the frayed wires very very tight and even then it a PITA (mainly with the 20 AWG) Sounds like 400 is the way then. p.s Does the soldering station come with tips, there is no mention that it does apart from a link to get some?

Yes it comes with a few different tips but I don't remember which. Have you thought of using a single strand wire instead ? much better for using on pcb's in my opinion mate, especially for the battery connections which are probably much smaller. But if I was using stranded then I'd certainly tin them but as little as possible.

I don't like conical tips myself but it's personal preference really. Whatever works best for you mate.
