I'm sure they'd be fine with LR Cartos. Before a lot of the gear that we have now came on the market loads of folks used mec mods with LR cartos

You can use a mech with any kind of cart/tank/atty but yr missing the point.
When using a mech (without a kick) you can not adjust the voltage or or wattage (and as a result the amperage) directly, the only thing that is directly adjustable is the resistance of your atty by rebuilding it's coil, and so by doing that achieving your other stats.
To understand what yr doing to first need to understand ohm's law.
So buying a mech without understanding what yr doing and with no intention of rebuilding your coils to your liking is like buying a car stuck in gear and without a gearshift, hoping it will drive smoothly.
The pros of a mech are that you can drop in ohm below what a regulated mod will allow you, its shorter then a regulated mod, it will also last much longer cos there are no electronic parts that can break down. The cons are the it's not adjustable (like stated above), it doesn't protect you from anything stupid you may do, like shorting the battery or over using it below the recommended point, there are no flashing lights are error messages, when something goes wrong you need to figure it out on yr own.

However, last LR carto I used on a UDT with a fully-charged battery burned out the carto almost instantly The full-charge of the battery was too high a voltage for the poor carto.. borked it within about 4 draws.....

I think that's what Nightshard was trying to point out earlier, depending on the res of the carto a mech mod may be too powerful. easiest way to figure it out is what voltage do you normally use with the cartos ? try them on a VV device between 3.7v and 4.2v as this is what to expect from a mech mod.

You should be fine then mate, mech mods are really suited better to low res as you're limited to the max of the battery but you do get the drop off in voltage as the battery drains. If you have probs with this might be worth getting a kick module too.

I've got an agat 3 an Igo l and a kayfun clone so if I don't get much joy with a mech and cartos I can always use with the rebuildables
