I was looking into doing the same with my golf wedges a while ago, and second everything people are saying about blowtorches vs even colour in an oven. arent you supposed to douse them in oil as well?

thought the dipping in oil was called quenching (excuse the spelling)where basically you heat up till cherry red and dunk in oil and coating the metal in carbon from the oil and leaving a black finish

Thank you johnners that's very helpful. When "blueing" clock parts, they bury them in brass fillings to get an even temperature all over, thats doing it with a blow torch and of course the parts are smaller. I'll be doing some myself in next few weeks so will let you know. MP We can all give our Nemesis tubes to you then. It would save us hanging around the carpark like a picket line. Yo phil, you dissing my clock, then you dissing all de E9 posse, dat bad man, me an me hommies, big nigel farquar-smyth and da main main, bad julian pipe, mayor od dis postcode, the man with da bling, we come down dat hackspace and pop an evod in your ass. you dig man. PS for balance in this article may i point out that other atties are available to pop in phils ass. MP

I've done a couple of bits already with a torch and it's hard to get an even finish ......people say dunk it in quarter to cool it .....don't as it changes the colour let it cool naturally.....if you find a better method I'm up for playing

I'll let you know what the verdict is. Looking at other sites the oven is definitely easier to get an even finish. It maybe a bit of a pain to set up, but once warmed up looks fairly easy. I need to check for an accurate thermometer as well.

A lot of stainless steel has varying properties so the colour change will happen at different times and also the thickness will have an effect too...so I don't think say1minuet for one tube will be the same for another tube from a different manufacturer. If you got a kiln I'd say watch through the window. Rda caps can be a pain as the top is thick and sides are thin

I know from my teacher this is an art, i'd say loads of practice on scrap until your sure, practice makes perfect etc, i;m making sure when i do my clock parts he's standing next to me, metals to valuble to scrap these days. To my limited knowlage would have thought oven method a no no unless you know exact temp, but i;m not sure, will ask question on thursday to our experts at club (we just got hot oven for enamaling watch faces, sure someon would have mentioned bluing)

Does the heat warp the metal or anything?
