I have'nt even started vaping yet but have a few orders on the go. Initially i went the safe route and ordered a Kanger protank 2 mini and evo twister 1300 , but on more reading i wanted something more stealthy and was considering a Bagua clone but the battery size put me off so went for the Nemesis Kayfun Lite combo. This one takes 18650 batteries , which i have ripped out of a laptop battery. Going of colour they are 2200mah of the Panasonic variety, what risks are entailed using these? I wont be sub zero ohm smoking and need to know what actually dictates what battery requirements are required for mods with no protection? Or do people buy batteries that have inbuilt protection?? Lost !! but not for long Sent from my MK908II using Tapatalk

Some use it some don't, I don't but use IMR batteries, safer chemistry, so these should be used as a minimum in a mech mod, if a mod has protection built in then obviously no need for protected batteries.

I am not well versed in batteries and mech mods, but I do know that over-discharging batteries can have explosive and disastrous consequences. I also use IMR batteries, but am very conscious of the fact that I have no protection so change every battery well before it runs out. I may err on the side of caution, as the batteries that I pop into my charger recharge in short order, but I would rather that than the other more dangerous way. There are some good threads on here about battery safety which I would recommend that you read before using unbranded batteries from a laptop! You need to be careful, those batteries are only a few centimetres from your face, and if used carelessly could do some severe and permanent damage.

All the 18650s I've taken out of laptops(about 60 in total) have been unprotected, the protection is in the charging board in the laptop battery. I only use them in regulated mods that have protection. If you still have the battery case, the battery number should be on it, Google the number and you should be able to find out exactly what cells it contains. You can normally work out the mah by checking the battery spec and dividing depending how many are in series and parallel.

It's just a matter of asking the right person. If not see if you have a local Freecycle site or put a wanted add in Gumtrees freebie section. The rule of thumb is the better the make of laptop the better the cells inside. All the cells I've reclaimed are Sony, Panasonic, or Samsung. Apple Mac thin batteries use Lipo's, thick ones Sony 18650s.

If you know the amps limits of your batteries and the resistance of your coil and the voltage/wattage or your mech then using ohm calculator you should not have any issues at all. know your stuff before going mech or sub ohm..

Personally I use IMR batteries plus a Vape Safe fuse in mechanical mods. An atomizer short can cause the battery to heat up, IMRs, although safer chemistry, are not protected, hence the fuse, to protect the battery. The fuse has a 6 amp limit so you can't take the resistance of your coils much below .8 probably, that's the only problem, since some people enjoy vaping at lower resistances
