A lot of good comments on the OP above, and I would like to add my *add monetary value here*. Most, if not all, of us started using shop bought premade replacement heads (although there are still some very happy vapers who simply replace their clearos lock stock and barrel when they fail). I certainly did, for the first few months of my vaping passage. Then I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, and being financially strained, wanted to save a few pennies too. So I had a go at recoiling a CE5 head. Lo and behold, it worked, all for an outlay of about 10p instead of the (then) £2.50 for a new atty head. This served me well for my Vivi Novas and then I bought a Protank, hearing good things about them almost a year ago. Sought advice from YouTube and the worthy forum members about the process and found it simple enough, saved a few more bob. Fast forward to the present day; I have 2 x RBAs with which I fit microcoils wicked with cotton wool. Does this compare to a Protank? No. End of. The Protanks are great, don't get me wrong, but they don't give the depth of flavour and the throat hit and vapour that a homemade coil does. Do I denigrate shop-bought heads? Of course not, they are the way that I and thousands of other vapers started on their journeys, and they have a massively important place in the market. Before you comment on shop bought heads, find someone who can give you a good blast on a microcoil and tell me that the vape is as good as something mad e commercially with at least an eye on it failing in the near future, requiring you to buy a replacement. The analogies above from OneDay illustrate perfectly why this forum is so good; it contains plenty of information for beginners (I post quite regularly to help new vapers), but also has help and guidance for those of us who choose to tinker, mess about, curse, swear, and generally have perverse fun making our own coils. geordie_vaper hits the nail on the head when he says that it is the satisfaction of vaping on something we have made ourselves which is the trigger here. Do keep posting on this topic, but try a homemade coil at your first opportunity - you will be amazed at the difference, or I'll eat my hat (Sennen Surf Shop beanie, if you must know!)

i like the satisfaction of it, after i build a coil and vape on it am like "yeah i did that" but little things like that tickle my pickle Exactly. When I press the button and hear the hiss of a viable coil, I experience a frisson of smugness that denotes I am only mostly and not entirely useless. One of the drawbacks of eternal solitude is that there is no-one here to witness my tiny triumph. Or to, y'know, cook my dinner.

I blame 'Captain Morgan' for my opening post. All replies made valid points (except the one about me falling out of bed, I usually fall INTO it) and I thank you all for taking the trouble to reply.

i use tanks and the coils which come with them. not into RBAs but i find the whole thing confusing and overwhelming. ask for a recommendation and you get so many different ones. IF i wanted one, it would have to be very easy to do (hint hint!)

What you need to understand is that without the enthusiast hobbyists then The development of the ecig would have been too slow. It would be decades Before they evolved to where we are today. All the ideas are coming from The users, then turned into mass market products in china. Without the pioneers who actively want to tinker the concept could have Sunk without trace long ago.

Nicely put markm - F1 is nothing more than big boy's toys!! My other passion is music (I'm a music teacher, no less!), and both in equipment and the music itself, new concepts are formulated by the hobbyists. For most of us we are happy to follow, but in any sphere of life you need those that will lead, by experimentation and construction.
