Afternoon all
Has anyone had any feedback from their dentist about vaping? Anyone know of any reports or trials done regarding effects of nicotine on gums or teeth?
I ask because I'm off to see my dentist tomorrow (she's lovely, but the dentistry isn't!) and I mentioned last time I saw her that I had bought a cigalike (the one you can get from Tescos, I forget the name) to attempt to cut down on the smoking. She said she appreciated the effort, but that she didn't know much about ecigs so couldn't (in her professional capacity) say 'yay! that's great!' and she would find out what she could about what the general consensus was about them within dentistry circles. She said her colleague had a patient who vaped too, and he'd asked her if she knew anything about it, so there was a growing need for information so they knew what to say to their patients.
I know what she's going to come back to me with as far as the NHS in general is concerned - 'without proper labelling and regulation of eliquids, you don't know for certain what's in it, therefore we can't recommend it.' (Do I have that right? Is that what they say? Feeling uncertain about it now...)
But my dentist never just trots out 'policy' to me. She explains why things are the way they are, as best she can, so I think I could have a pretty fair conversation with her about it.
So what I'm interested in is providing her with some 'nitty gritty': the real nuts and bolts of exactly what any problems might be and the reasons for it. I know she'll have done some homework on it too, so it'll be interesting when we get together to compare notes.
So what's your experiences been folks? Has anyone else had any good convos like this with their dentist? Any online resources you could point me toward that I can share with mine? Can I pick your collective brains please?
Your input would be much appreciated!
Thank you!

My gum disease is now in remission and my teeth only need a very slight scale and polish once a year now instead of every 3 months that's all the evidence I need

That's super Karma! Result! Can I ask how much you used to smoke and what strength nic you're on now? And also how long ago you made the switch? This is actually the main reason I looked at ecigs in the first place, because I have a prob with gum disease; my teeth are fine so far. Thanks so much for replying

I chained smoked rollies but have been tobacco free for over 2 years now. I vape around 15mg mark, have done since the beginning really, that strength just seems to suit me Interdental brushes help too!

Awesome stuff, thank you! Gives me hope that my gums can improve as I seem to comfy with around 12mg aswell. Yeah I'm familiar with the wee brushes - they're great, but they make my gums sore But that's because I don't use them enough

My dentist was "pleased" that I switched.

My dentist commented that my gums looked much healthier, as did my tongue and after a scale and polish they looked whiter than they have in years Sent from my Nexus 7 using proboards

I'm looking forward to completing the regular questionnaire when I next visit the dentist and ticking the box that says 'no' to the question 'Do you smoke?'!

I should have said that was about a year ago, maybe she had not been exposed to so much neg propaganda then.
My Dr sent me a letter about something to do with smoking I forget what exactly about a month ago. So I rang the sugary and told the receptionist (whoever answered the phone) that I was no longer a smoker and had not been for over 18 months. I pointed out that this is because I had switched to eCigs and she was pleased also.
I also told them that when I went to their smoking clinic thing (about 3.5 years ago) I found it next to useless as they would only supply one brand of 16 hour patches that did not suite me. I did use other 24 hour patches at that time to stop for 5 months. The ones they offered didn't stay stuck on for me for very long and caused more irritation than the ones I used, and I have irregular sleeping patterns so need 24 hour patches.

My teeth have improved greatly as well, but the one important thing to remember is that nicotine DOES decrease blood supply in the mouth. I recently had 2 wisdom teeth removed and was advised to keep vaping to a minimum for a few days. I researched and this is based on scientific fact rather than the usual nonsense. Wounds in the mouth will heal faster if you aren't inhaling nicotine. Its still far and away better than smoking however

Used to have to see the hygenist every six months for a good scraping after each dental check-up. Haven't needed to go since started vaping nearly two years ago and three check-ups later. Haven't mentioned vaping to my dentist but after last visit he said "keep up the good work", so he's pleased with my teeth.
