Somerset recommendations

As the title suggests, looking for recommendations for places to visit... am treating Mr Lairey to a surprise long weekend here in Bagborough near Taunton.  

I'm thinking of a trip on the West Somerset railway, but how far along the line to go?  All the way to Minehead, or is there somewhere on the route worth stopping for?

We will have 4 days, 3 nights...  want to do lots of walking in the Quantocks, but does anyone have any recommendations/must dos to share?

You have got to go to Bath if you've never been before!

Was there last year for long weekend, can recomend the railway, we went from Watchet (which is nice small village) to Minehead, they had a special steam day on and the station was alive with trains and exhibitions.
If your into Cider, take the Taunton to Ilchester road and look out for a hand writen cider sign pointing right, some of the best scrumpy we had in years.
A nice drive is across Exmoor to Ifracombe, pleasant little town at the end.

So many wonderful places to visit in somerset/devon .... Juntion 27 on the M5 would be good as I could meet you there

Seriously though .... some lovely beaches in North Devon (not far from Somerset) - Saunton Sands is lovely Cheddar Gorge is also lovely.

lairey, I grew up in South Somerset and probably a lot has changed since I was last there. I certainly second wibble 's suggestion re Cheddar Gorge & Wookey Hole.

Also if you're into coastal sites, my favourite was always Lyme Regis in Dorset, not that far from Taunton (where I passed my driving test BTW).

Probably DiscoDes or Roscopecotrain would advise you on the latest places to go, and Des can certainly tell you where to get your 'scrumpy'.

prr Barth is not in Somerset

Wells is a nice place to visit and just down the road Glastonbury. If you catch the train to Minehead it's okay but a bit further down the coast is Lynton and Lynmouth which is much prettier. I like the Somerset levels, lots of little villages I can recommend a trip to Burrowhill Cider www.ciderbrandy.co.uk/#1 where they produce Somerset Brandy and Cider of course! If you're lucky you'll run into the owner Julian Temperley (Father of the famous Fashion Designer) and get a look at the old French Calvados Still that they use to make the Brandy. There's a great smokehouse called Brown and Forest at Hambridge www.smokedeel.co.uk/index.html they have a lovely "Tea Room" where you can sample their products and drink tea from proper china cups with gabardine table cloths.

Ahhhh Lynton & Lynmouth !!! very pretty !!! I'd 2nd that suggestion from DiscoDes. Personally I prefer the beaches like Saunton or Woolacombe in North Devon as they are Long, Sandy and allow dogs all year  
But If you're coming down to the west country I'd have to say ... chuck a few more quid in the petrol tank and go to Perranporth in Cornwall !!!! This is 'My beach' but am happy to share it with friends

DiscoDes I was born in Bath and lived there until I went to university in London in 1976, it was Somerset, then went to Avon with the government boundary changes. Now Bath is North East Somerset unitary authority. I hold that I was born in Somerset and very proud of it.

No worries mate, I'm an interloper any way, born in Surrey, grew up in Essex, lived in Cornwall for 8 years, moved to what was Avon (yuk!) then North Somerset, now Somerset, PHEW!
