It was fine a couple of days ago, then last night it kept randomly turning itself off.
Today there's no response at all. I've tried umpteen batteries, given the inner post a prod and a tug, and frowned at it sternly for hours, but nowt.
It appears to have perished.
Any ideas?

These generally solve most vamo battery problems - the springs that come with vamos aren't very springy!

I asked where you got yours from as I got one from focal that came DOA and nothing was ever done very poor quality and I will never ever buy anything from focal ever again worst after sales service ever there was no quality in my vamo whatsoever I have fixed hundreds of vamos but there focal ones are the worst I have ever seen it takes a lot to get my back up but focal is definitely on my list of never to use again 43 days delivery for crap or fasttech 9 days for decent stuff no competition

Peering up inside the V5, there appears to be a crumbly filler pr packing material up there, surrounding the post. Is this normal?

But... but... it's a Vamo. Gotta have a Vamo. Every home should have one, even though they're easily banjaxed.

I haven't got a Vamo but I suspect that 'crumbly filler surrounding the post' is insulation material and shouldn't be crumbly. Maybe its causing the post to short out?

My old V3 had a circular cardboard stick on washer type insulator on the top end ... But it prevented my button top batteries making a good contact ... I'm sure nipple tops would've been fine but I didn't have any .... So I picked the cardboard ring off and it worked fine after that ..... Not suggesting you do it but it might be worth trying as a last resort

Well, I've poked and scraped and gouged and tweezed, all to no avail.
So I've done what I should have done at the first hint of a problem and ordered another.
