Well, I've poked and scraped and gouged and tweezed, all to no avail. So I've done what I should have done at the first hint of a problem and ordered another. Well I hope you ordered this one and not this one, the latter does not have the updated firmware.

I just ordered a new SS vamo after the threads died on the last one & no top caps in stock anywhere, but I dunno if it has the new firmware or not. Got it from ebay, JDD4 for £27-99 delivered next day. If it doesn't have the new firmware is the difference worth the return postage & maybe extra cost? I guess the last one was old firmware, seemed OK until the threads died.
Also, I'm wondering if part of the problem is that SS vamo + kayfun weighs a fair bit, so if you knock it over it hits with a fair thump. Anyone know if the chrome is any lighter? And whether the chrome survives better than it used to with the V2?

Good call! You Guys with problems can try stretching the existing spring first to see if it makes a difference. Tried fiddling about with the spring, and also tried the bottom cap from an old Vamo 2. Peering up inside the V5, there appears to be a crumbly filler pr packing material up there, surrounding the post. Is this normal? Did you actually stretch the spring? we had so many of them where the spring was iffy. If you shake it up and down with a battery in, is there any noise besides the buttons? sorry for statin the bleedin obvious, just checkin

Thanks ruffdog, I have one of those. It doesn't work well, so I used the copper wire method - actually with a strand from a 'steel wool' cleaning pad because I don't have any copper wire here. It works OK but is a bit fiddly because you have to do it each time you change the atty.

Excellent info / idea and all through it was thinking exactly the same thing. Just do it with the AFC and tighten it down well solid. Then you have a 510 connector on top and can change Atty at will. I have a V5 Vamo that's been around forever, and it's gone awol on me several times... fixed it by giving the contacts, 510 and battery, a bloody good cleaning (in this case using a spec cleaning fluid spray, but iso alch would probably do a better job) and letting it stand for a day or two.
