For absolute newbies I reckon that the 901 is the best, and I think it should have auto batteries to start with - manuals can always be added once the user knows what they're doing to some extent. 2 batties and 2 atties are minimum requirements, I reckon. With the trad starter kits (2 batties, 1 atty, 1 charger) I've always advised buying 2 kits, so one would have 4 batties, 2 atties and 2 chargers. That would be the ideal starter kit but I suppose it might be a bit too expensive for some doubting Thomases or Thomasinas to lay out +/- £40 on their first e-cig. Finding a supplier of reliable 901s would be a great service to us all and might prevent some newbies falling off the wagon in the early stages scylla

When I bought my first 901 from VS, it came with one manual and one auto. I hated the auto and returned it for another manual.
I gave that second hand kit I bought from Tim to a friend of mine who is hard up and she couldn't get on with the manual. She also worried that the increased effort put into taking a drag would cause more lines around her lips! Needless to say, she has swapped that kit for one of my screwdrivers with all spare batteries and my only mains charger...........
I think the 901 is a good little starter set, although with the Riva being so cheap it is a viable contender. However, the Riva as it is sold is not really a starter kit as it doesn't come with any prefilled carts or a bottle of juice.
To buy a kit for around the £25 mark that would keep you going for a few weeks (ie enough juice and a couple of atties) would be the best level to start, especially for cigarette smokers as it is likely less than one weeks worth of cigs. Roll up smokers are a different kettle of fish though.

I was going to suggest the 901 kits & if possible around the £25.00 mark. But I guess to be able to sell them at that price a supplier may have to buy them in very large quantities?
As for manuals v auto. I moved onto mods way before manual generics where available. So never used a manual generic & my worry for a newbie would be them having to be careful about not triggering the button accidentally.
Agree with Jaki that the Riva or Tech 016 are a viable contender - however, it's the cost of the replacement batteries that would put me off them.

I'm taking into account that we're looking for a kit to introduce a smoker to easily-used and not-too-expensive e-cigs that give a decent vape, and will keep them going for a few weeks. They can upgrade themselves once they know from experience what it's all about.
I much prefer manual batteries to auto, but I think for someone who's completely green, auto is best.

The reason I champion the manual batteries is this: The action of vaping is different to that of smoking in that the length and intensity of the draw has to be longer and deeper to get a decent amount of vapour and throat hit. With an automatic battery, that draw has to be even longer - ok, it's just a second - but the whole process is harder work. Now, I totally agree that pressing a button to take a drag is NOT like smoking a ciggie, but it is an easily learned action that makes vaping a bit easier and a bit more like smoking. Another thing that could make a huge difference to starter kits is a 'handy hints and tips' section on the instructions. Things like taking a longer draw, pressing the manual battery a second before you take a drag to warm the attie, ideas for making sure you never run out of battery life, honest information about ordering new atties before your others die, what to try if this is not 'doing it' for you (eg stronger juice etc) - just any extra information that will stop new vapers resigning their PV to the 'unloved drawer'.

personally i would plumb for a sd or similar, there so cheap now and you finish up getting one anyway. that said they are a bit alien when youve only ever smoked ciggies. i enjoyed my 901 kits but only for 2 or 3 weeks. the thing is guys you do realise that with the good news weve all just had comes the bad news imo everything will go back up now the pressures off. raggy

james i was not for one minute suggesting you would do a price hike, i was thinking of the less scrupulous sellers, i forget your a seller sometimes. i also was aiming at hardware stocks that were going to be stuck on traders shelves, they have been running them down and selling off a good bit cheaper, i dont think this will happen as often now. raggy

lol Raggy don't panic if you didn't notice by now i am not the kind of person that jumps to the conclusion that everything written is aimed at me or meant to be bad .... All I meant was that no matter what happens I will not be increasing my prices of any of the stock I currently hold IN FACT watch this space when I come back from Vacation there might be a few thongs gonna change Price wise all for the better .... Especially for the new vapers and start up kits ..... AND A LOAD more flavours I mean A LOAD MORE lmfao you gonna love it truly I am rather excited of the prospect ...OPPS lol and since I just realised I am in a thread where I should advertise my wares in any way .... I don't expect anybody to buy anything p: ;)JAMES;)
