no positive up and nothing, i thought it might of been cause they are flat top batteries but then if that was the case they wouldnt work the other way round, confusing You may need a battery magnet to give the positive a nipple. Like on my sony flat top.
Because of the indent in the bottom switch flat tops wont make contact.

So would this be the only reason to use a button top rather than a flat top, or is there any other particular reason why you would need or favour one style over the other ? Kind of confusing that both styles are sold but never anything to say use this style of battery for mod types a,b & c and the other style for mod types x,y & z ?

As far as I can tell it just depends on the contact design. The stingray is the only mech ive come across so far that needs a button top to make contact, but there may be others that are type specific. It certainly would help if they said what battery type you need to use. A pack of those magnets will let you use what you like, you can even put them on the bottom of the battery so you can use it the other way around.
Edit: That's good then geordie_vaper it must be making contact on some part of the metal, you got lucky.

Just don't do that if you are using a kick type device.

Unless of course it doesn't make too much difference after all. It's just something I've been pondering and it seemed like a good time to ask. Cheers.

The sony vtc's work spot on in the stingray, I'm not getting what the actual issue is that anyone needs to stick them in upside down

The 5mm x 1mm areonly £1.76 for 20 and the postage is free. TBO I didn't try the sony without the magnet as my other flat top didn't work in it, so when I got the sony's I just put the magnet on without bothering to see.

Does the heat shrink on the battery go too far into the centre stopping the metal making contact? i just cut off the top part of the heat shrink off and when i went to put the battery in it hit against the side of the mod and a spark come from somthing and the battery shorted I just suggested that the circle of exposed metal on the bottom maybe smaller that the screw at the top of the switch, so exposing a little more would fix it if that was the problem. Not taking all the heat shrink off the bottom, I hope you didn't get hurt and it didn't damage the mod. Did you cut it all the heat shrink off the bottom? Which way up was the battery when this happened? Was there an atty on it? You should be aright as long as the sides of the battery are completely covered.
