Several months ago I downloaded an update to Open Office, but I think I may have got it from somewhere other than the official site, (probably had too many sherberts), so this is no slight on Open Office which is great. Anyway, immediately afterwards I found that I had a new search engine, a new video/audio player that kept popping up, and new tabs opening automatically with those stupid websites that say you need to fix your system.
Managed to get rid of the first two, and the 'new tabs' stopped after a few weeks. However in the last few days, the 'new tabs' problem has started again, and Norton flashes up with saying it as stopped an unsafe app. So... I've obviously got some malware, and I've heard Malwarebytes mentioned on here before, to get rid of these types of problems that a normal AV doesn't spot.
Just wondered if any of you use this particular software, does it work and does it interfere with your normal AV. I have researched the reviews and get conflicting opinions. Thanks.

I don't use it Raffles, managed to keep my systems clean for the past 10 years. However it is a really powerful bit of software. It should not interfere with any other AV software, I believe this is because it reboots into safe mode to do it's business (disclaimer - like I said I've never used it) but I could be wrong. It's the best option there is for removing malware, which you are obviously suffering with.

Raffles I have been using the `free` issue of the Malwarebytes . It does not interfere with any other program on my Pc & laptop. No longer have any problem with malware. Go for it. I would also suggest you download Microsoft Security Essentials program which again is free, this also gets rid of any problems with the microsoft based programs on your pc. Good Luck.

Raffles malwarebytes is brilliant But as for Norton, I'd get rid of it & use Avast (free).

Out of personal interest I've just run Malwarebytes on a five year old install on my lappy. It's so easy, and thankfully nothing detected Norton? Give it the big boot, there's Avast as Chrissie suggests or Avira. Both are free.

Thanks Chrissie & Ripshod... I heard negative reviews of Norton some years ago, but have it on both my desktop and laptop and have been happy with it. Any reason I shouldn't be? Had McAfee before and it kept screwing up.

Norton uses one of the most inefficient engines there is. It misses so much stuff it may as well not be there.

There are quite a few good free products and IMO some of the big Antivirus houses have made their software into such bloatware that you would need to upgrade in order to leave it running.

Malware bytes is great. What os are you running? Used to work in a computer gaming centre/PC repair place and virus killing was my speciality. If you find malwarebytes doesn't fix the issue let me know and we can run hijack this as it sounds like you have gotten several malicious bho / hijackers on. Also another programming that might be of use is spybot s&d Happy hunting
