Wise lady Evan! Although I always used to love raw cake mixture, it used to be a great treat to be allowed to lick the food mixer beaters after Mum had made a cake. . Mmmmm, yum me too Perpy.

...it used to be a great treat to be allowed to lick the food mixer beaters after Mum had made a cake. . . That dates me. It was the wooden spoon in my day, Perpy. So I've out-dated you

I still use a wooden spoon for cake making and making thick custard for trifle. I used to make celebration cakes to order too, when I was in my 20s and early 30's. Every so often I make a Christmas cake for my daughter, grandkids and us. Not this year though, I bought them from Tesco instead. Nice, but nowhere near as nice as home made.

Well you did have a rather good excuse {{{Anne}}} but when you're back to full fitness you'll have to take up the hobby again and we'll have a thread like the Pet Pics for everyone's cakes. Re the little buns with icing and decorations on - have forgotten what they call them now, but we just used to call them "fancies" in my day

French Fancies we used to call those little square iced cakes Scylla, why quite I don't know cept that was the name on the box. Cupcakes seems to be a blanket term used for anything little & cakey now.

We used to call them fairy cakes.
Yes cupcakes does seem to have become a bit of a catch-all name Perpy. But to me it's somewhat of an Americanism, and although I've nothing at all against our friends over the pond. I do wish for our own part we would stick to our roots and keep our old fashioned words and terminology. It's a bit of a gripe of mine lol.

Lol . . . completely agree Roz, our language doesn't need adulterating, it's fit for the purpose as it is.

I agree too, we should keep 'our own' language. We used to call them fairy cakes too. Do you remember butterfly cakes? I used to love making those.
