Hi all, I got into my car today and set off driving as usual when I noticed the smell of burning a few minutes into my journey. I looked down at an area of the centre consol I use for bits and bobs and there smouldering away was an old parking receipt. The GF grabbed it and disposed of it.
I instantly asked myself what could of caused that and realised I had an efest red 18350 in there as an emergency battery. I picked it up and blinkin heck it was red hot, too hot to hold for more than a second or two in the same place.
This battery wasn't in use at the time so I have a question. Is it possible having also chucked a bunch of keys in there that somehow the keys were making a connection between the positive and negative on the battery and caused this ?

Keys shorting the battery is more than possible. Always carry spare batteries in battery cases would be my advice mate, after all there about £1 a pop

Greg I kind of knew my theory might be confirmed so my own silly complacency then. Lesson learnt. Jay

Greg is right, keys & even coins touching the battery could have easily caused it.

Ye definitely sounds like you shorted it out with your keys. We have all done daft things a member here merely toasted his nuts due to change in his pocket with a battery. I dead shorted one accident my when measuring one grabbed the metal callipers instead of the plastic ones lol. Easy to advoid grab a battery box or for 18350 I use the innards from a kinder egg they great for keeping spare rayon, koh gen do in as well. All hail the kinder egg Tease-smiley

Chrissie after a year plus vaping I should know better really. I said to the GF straight away that's my fault entirely, well most things are apparently so I got in there first Jay

Yeah, I also shorted a battery (18650) by stowing it in my jacket breast pocket along with housekeys. The top popped, emitting quite a pong, thankfully the car was stationary so it was a case of getting out and tossing the offending item as far away as possible. Not terribly WEEE but needs must.
(Might wanna move this thread mods, antz will be weeing in their pantz)

Must admit I'm a bit paranoid about this sort of thing happening to me, so bought 5 x battery boxes from eBay a few months ago, and use these for storing the OH's 18350s for her Lavatube (I know, I know, but she has an iStick on the way although she doesn't know it yet!) as well as batteries that I take with me in the car for a day at work. I am even careful carrying charged batteries from bedroom to living room, holding them in separate hands to avoin any contact - call me a wimp if you like, but I haven't lost a battery through carelessness yet! Sorry JayJ, that wasn't meant to sound condescending, BTW!
