If you have a nexus or google device read this before you update www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-30116319Mrs updated her tablet other night this morning its turned into a brick. Bloody unusable, very slow apps crashing etc. Trying to work out how to back up her books etc some of which were bought from Amazon. She's not a happy camper. Tech support advise a system factory reset. Hmm useful.

Nexus 7, bought it the first day it was released erm, last summer/ autumn?
Have noticed things not working as fast or good, especially wifi, but I'm having general internet problems at the moment so didn't make the connection.

Uhoh If I come across a fix I'll let you know I'm guessing mine is the 2013, but it's not right still.
I will do a factory reset and pray that it doesn't mess everything up.

If the worst comes to the worst then google 'cyanogenmods'. There's a reason google want to buy them out that you'll come to realise yourself. I have an original (2011) Galaxy Y running Kitkat, when samsung say it's impossible.

I have an original (2011) Galaxy Y running Kitkat, when samsung say it's impossible. Yes... The tech world is annoying sometimes. I bought a netbook years ago that did not work out of the box... it had a wi-fi issue. So, I updated it to the latest x.y.z over cable and it just got worse. The product should never have been on the market, and people should never have installed the latest software. The manufacturers f*** up terribly sometimes. In the end, I installed a version of Linux that worked flawlessly. Most customers would not have managed it.... it was quite complicated. Old android hardware often falls foul of the latest updates. TLDR. Never update anything that works well.... leave it be. I've seen perfectly good phones ruined by the latest software.

To be honest I wouldn't have updated, as apart from the spell checker nexus 7 is the best, this one anyhow , but it flashed up on the screen to update, and I just did it without thinking really..... Probably had had a few pints

100% with you on that djs - if it ain't broke... Thing is the Galaxy Y came with the original Gingerbread, which was just carp, plus I wanted to run the smart software for my BEC Pro. Other side of the coin is I've just returned a hudl2 to tesco, took more than 14 hours to charge from the mains switched off, since new (about 2 weeks). It's not always the software at fault.

Tech support advise a system factory reset. Hmm useful. Very sensible to try to backup data. I usually keep all data and content such as books, videos etc on a microSD card, much easier to backup as it's removable. Also, remember that you should be able to re-download your amazon books if you need to, without cost. They are linked to the account, not the device. It takes time to get that content from amazon, google, kobo et but it can be done if needed. As for contacts, calenders etc, if they are not sensitive due to data protection, link them to an online service such as google where they are stored in the cloud and you can re-sync a device to them after a restore to regain the data. It's an unfortunate state of affairs these days where almost all software developers release poorly written and tested code. I think back to the days of the C64, the Atari ST, the Amiga, where patches were few and far between because software was well written and thouroughly tested before release. Slaps for our software developers, bring back software engineers!!!

Unfortunatly I don't think you can plug a usb or memory card into the nexus. I know on mine the 2013 version you cannot. Will have to look over the Mrs one again to check. If not I'm assuming I can hook up to PC then explore contents and nabb what I want. Ye her apps mail etc is all synced with google cloud. Its mostly books on akido reader and piccys that need backing up.
