Thanks crunchynut, it is a 1.8ohm coil with 28g kanthal running it between 7 and 9 watts (on the istick ) the ohms read the same on my ohms checker If that is the watts you are reading on an istick Mrsmac, the actual wattage you are getting is about 11 - 13 which might help explain why it is spitting a bit With a tight draw sucking up lots of liquid and your coils spaced apart which I think will also increase the amount of liquid being vaporised maybe being other factors. That's my guess anyhow

Thanks guys, I have done several things and I think I may have got it going ok...For now lol
I binned the coil cause I was getting fed up and redone it with a microcoil, when it was time to change the wick and the coil was working well (had the same old occasional burning with the micro), I took a small screw driver and gently separated the wraps and opened up the airflow a bit.
This has allowed juice to travel freely whilst having smaller gaps and no burning!
Oh and another contrast was that i stuffed more cotton in the coil than I usually would. I am now up to 8.8w on the istick and a very satisfying vape it is too!
So everything you all suggested worked! Thank you all and I prefer this much more than the tight coil x

Try this Try again...
I'm a beginner but as soon as I see the pics it made sense to me, small wicks on the deck to wick quick enough and juice stored. For the first time I can chain vape at 12watts (about where you prob are on the istick) up till my DNA30 board says "too hot" without a dry or burnt hit. I done it just by the pics, credit to the guy for posting it but the text made it sound more complete than it is, split the cotton, drop two down on the deck without blocking the channels, put the other two on the upper deck. Works for me Good luck

If you don't want to adjust the aiflow ensure your cotton is not too loose inside the coil. If it is loose it will spit and crackle a lot more.

Hot spots, coils like that need to be "tweaked" and fired, "tweaked" and fired. Just like sloppy micro coiling leads to problems so does sloppy non contact coiling. Not that i'm saying that there's anything wrong with your coil but it will need some messing about with. Obviously you have the issue of burning the cotton which is why you would normally use silica with this type of coiling as you can fire and tweak without worrying about burning the wicking material.
