Well I had a look in daylight can't see any dodgy joints although my soldering could off been better, was planning on marking the box out but when I noticed I had the wrong usb I thought I would do something, didn't take enough time and my soldering iron tip is knackered already, prob just overheated somewhere..... anyway forgot to take battery out this morning and shorted it with a screwdriver while taking the screen out yet again, nice spark and finally put it out of its misery...

This will make you feel better letsavitI buggered up the wooden lid for eclipse so set about making another one. Spent 1/2 a day measuring, shaping the rebate so it cleared the chip & screen mount, sanding sides and radius. It fitted like a glove. Sanded with 400 grit and started applying shellac, 4-5 coats, dry in between then 400 grit. repeat, repeat and repeat. Sand with 600 grit and do the same. Sand with 1000 grit and do the same, building up a solid layer that felt like velvet. Today was day 3, I spent the morning doing the same and was ready to 'Body in', put the final high gloss finish on it with mostly meths and a very little shellac. I took a beak to make tea. Half way through cooking tea and enjoying a beer my wife called to me, I went through to the sitting room to see the lid in splinters on the carpet. I'd left it within reach of the dog who was looking like this at me: That pic was a while ago, he's nearly 13 now but like all Springers that means 13 months. I counted to 10 and thought 'he doesn't know what he's done' but he bloody well did, he's been watching me make it for 3 days.

Yea that's an ouch but with puppy dog eyes like that they get away with murder @scooby Yes its the time, I'll order another, mine was only a fews hours and included sorting the battery holder out as well, that's not wasted, think I went in a bit bullish and with little planning (I have space) as when doing the ZNA I had the board soldered in and out about 3 times to sort the fire bottom out with no issue. Question for you guys, I have the right size wire but did have trouble getting it through the board hole for a quicker cleaner solder, some was more blob on top..... Do you tin before?

If you have silicon insulated wire tin it before stripping the insulation, u put the iron on the end and feed loads of solder in, once it's cool you can feel how far the solder tinned by bending it, then trim the blob off the end and strip or push back the silicon. I had a hell of a time until I figured this trick out, with silicon I try to pull the insulation back rather than stripping it off so you can push it back nice and close to the joint.

Thanks, a good tip and trick, makes perfect sense, use the insulation as a mould for the solder .. Should of asked yesterday ...

Pick that up from VB before I even turned an iron on letsavit glad I did as it works a treat and I'd never of thought of it, would have been working away removing solder with a jewelers file or something. It's surprising how much solder gets sucked in, seem to be feeding in loads.

Ive just got a little pot of solder paste today, 15 quid but its bloody marvellous stuff. With this stuff i can strip the end of the wire. Quick twist to tidy it up. Quick dip in the paste. Pop it through the hole on the board and just touch the end with the iron and it's in. Wish i had got some sooner its cut my soldering time in half. Managed to wire up the board ready to go in the squonker and break down a hana and rewire the board ready to go in a shapeways, all in a couple of hours. So much easier than wire, love it

@windows I've had a syringe of that surface mount solder paste for years and tbh I don't find it any easier, unless you are surface mounting with in a skillet with a heat gun. I am used to the way solder goes into globs and flows, maybe yours has more/better flux than your solder or your solder is too thick for fine work, or maybe my solder paste is so-so but it was decent stuff from RS IIRC Antex (not at hand I keep it in the fridge as per instructions).
