@windows I've had a syringe of that surface mount solder paste for years and tbh I don't find it any easier, unless you are surface mounting with in a skillet with a heat gun. I am used to the way solder goes into globs and flows, maybe yours has more/better flux than your solder or your solder is too thick for fine work, or maybe my solder paste is so-so but it was decent stuff from RS IIRC Antex (not at hand I keep it in the fridge as per instructions). Dunno VapingBad as i bought a really expensive roll of the thinnest solder i could find, it just seems to work for me. I also like the fact that it gives me a free hand to manipulate the wire while ive got the iron on it.

But I have never tried dipping the wire in it @windows, may dig it out next time if the memory is working. But the extra flexible silicon insulated wire I use for power in mods would still be a PITA with no solder as the strands are so fine and the overall thickness is such a tight fit, if a strand doesn't go through the first time and you twist it it just gets even harder to thread. I always use single core hook up wire for the low power connections that doesn't need tinning before hand.

Worth a go. You could always give it a tin and then dip it afterwards.

He's nearly ended up at Battersea many times over the years @windows and yes I was mad but I can make another one.
Interesting about the paste. Never used it but in all the soldering I've seen, both parts were heated before adding solder to the wire so as to get a good flow through to the other side of the board and a solid joint.
Always thought you'd get dry joints using it on PCD's but seen it mentioned a couple of times on here so must be something in it.

Well I had a look in daylight can't see any dodgy joints although my soldering could off been better, was planning on marking the box out but when I noticed I had the wrong usb I thought I would do something, didn't take enough time and my soldering iron tip is knackered already, prob just overheated somewhere..... anyway forgot to take battery out this morning and shorted it with a screwdriver while taking the screen out yet again, nice spark and finally put it out of its misery... gutted for you atleast my fubar was on a clone board and it wasnt a total waste as i think i figured out how to build this mini pain now it seems the chip i had would only work under 1 ohm(production prob )so i prob buggered them by trying to fix the unfixable i has a cunning plan to insulate the inside of the box for the evolve chip oh and just to add insult to injery the soddin fd 510 wont come out gerrrrrrr

F@@king, s@@ting, bl@@king hell. Ive just had the mod building day from hell and should never be let near a soldering iron ever again. I have just managed to fry 90 quids worth of boards in one f@@king afternoon. First a shapeways build goes into meltdown, so i think oh well s@@t happens get on with the squonker. Finished the damn thing and after all the time ive put into it, the same things happens. Should have walked away for the day when I screwed the first one. Unfortunately i was so mad the whole thing got launched across the room at high speed so its game over for all of it. This poxy thread is jinxed and should be killed

Sorry @windows ... Cheers letsavit but as they say sh1t happens as you have had your fair share of. Expensive mistakes but if im going to offer to build stuff for peeps then crap like this is going to happen. Just wish it hadn't happened all in one day. Shouldn't complain really as ive had a good run with no problems.

They say bad luck comes in threes @windows and IIRC that's the 3rd fried board and hope it's the last mate.
