Moving for the second time in 18 months. BT were hopeless last time. This time I tried online. The last occupier of the flat only used a mobile, although there is a landline and there was a £130 fee for the engineer to reconnect. So I phoned and got told the same. I explained I wanted simply to transfer my phone and broadband package as it was and keep the phone number. She was sorry but I would have to pay the £130. So I asked for a Migration Authorisation Code. Suddenly the engineer was free and my monthly fee would be reduced by £5 if I committed to 12 months. I doubt I have the best deal but still I'm calling it a result.

Years ago when i was on Vodafone i would call up every year and ask about cancelling, eventually i ended up with more minutes and texts than i ever used and my monthly line rental was £1.50.

BT are liable to waive fees if you are out of contract with them, if you're still in a contract then they will charge. Good on you for threatening to leave, the sooner that they realise that ridiculous costs are not fair then the better.
