Prefer the option to have both..external mostly at home, USB out and about... Purchased a 2 bay nitecore charger for the car/when out and it's still in the boot unused.

Separate batteries are easier to take out with you as there's little danger that you'll run out of power. I was carting 3 isticks with me at a time. A couple of batteries takes up less space.

This is an interesting question. I tend to fall between the two camps, as although I have an MVP3 and a Smok M65, both of which charge via USB either in my van or at home using a wall charger, I still carry (and use) a mech mod with 18650s. When I bought the M65 I took the chance to get a couple of Samsung 25Rs and I have one in the box mod, with the other currently as a spare. I have two Samsung 24Rs for the Caravela (mech mod), and another 4 Panasonic 18650s of varying ages which are now my backup batteries. So although I do like the convenience of a USB-charged box mod, I still use the Caravela at home (mainly to keep the box mods away from prying SWMBO eyes!) and do like the 'basicness' of this vape method. I'm sure that by next week, all will be changed around again!

If I am "out and about" I am rarely in a place where I can recharge batteries, be they 18650s or USBs. It is only at night, at home, when I have the chance to recharge batteries/USBs. So if I have to carry spares they will have to be in my pocket. Now as all of my ecigs, be they tube or box mods, are always on a lanyard and I find that the lanyard is the most convenient and safest place to have them. The very idea of having to carry spare heavy batteries in my pocket in this day and age is so ridiculous it ain't true.
With the Istick lasting 22 hours and my 5ml attys doing me 24 hours plus, my days of carrying tube mods and spares batteries are long gone. I will continue to use tube mods and their batteries in the house until they or their batteries go phutt and then they will be binned.
Some USBs clearly have their faults but IMO, USB Box Mods are the way forward and with smaller, lighter and more reliable ones in development, they will soon become the more normal vaping device.

All my mods have the capability of USB charging but I've never used it. I don't work at a computer so that's a no go for me.
When I can charge 4 high drain 18650 batteries in little over an hour why hang around waiting hours charging one via USB?

I have only bought one battery included mod since my first order - it was cheap and cute. I hate chucking things. I find sticking batteries in a charger easier than plugging in to a usb. I have enough batteries that I can charge them when I feel like it.

If it's got a USB, I use it. Point in hand is the Smowell DPV-50. The screws are made of butter, and even if they weren't, it takes too long to find the allen key and then unscrew and re-screw. If I could just swap a battery quickly, I would. Same goes for any mod. So if the battery is changeable without tools, I will change the battery. If I'm out. If I'm indoors, I will charge it via the USB and use another mod. If it doesn't have a USB, well....... I swap the battery and use a charger.
Lots of "ifs" really. But the convenience of a USB is nice.

I only recharge batteries or USB when I am asleep. So having a unit that will last all day until such times as I go to bed, is just the Bees Knees.
And now that I have moved most of my vaping gear out to the shed, USB Mods are basically for out and about and in the house and the Battery Mods are all in the shed along with their chargers.
I suppose I will have battery Mods for a few years yet, but as the batteries and the tube Mods fail, I will not be renewing them.
