I'm a super proud Cornishman, yet our flag is always missed out, even on 99% of any forms you have to fill out there's never cornish in a tick box.

That's because your are our secret in the attic @tedster. How would we explain you lot to the rest of the world? Especially as we don't understand it ourselves. There's so much wrong with the original post. It's not, nor has it ever been, racist to be proud to be English. However, it's not in an Englishman's nature to bull himself up. We flew the flag, as we always do, on St. George's day. Nobody ever objects, and the positive comments come from all races.

buggritt I couldn't have put that better, and I agree we're all the same just in different wrappers. If you were in politics I'd vote for you

Yeah - that picture... It originated from the Britain First social media campaign... The clue is in "Share if you agree".
Personally I loathe this picture as it reeks of passive aggression. The implication being that everyone who flies the Flag of St George is perceived to be a racist. This, of course, is poppycock (I love that word - it's root is the Dutch phrase "pappekak" where "pap" is "soft" and "kak" is, "dung".... i.e. freshly laid cowpat).
It is interesting though - we all know that the Flag of St George, like the Union Jack, is flown from government buildings, town halls, youth groups, military and churches... Nothing new there. Likewise, when flown by a private individual (nearly said Citizen which would be wrong) that is most likely a show of proud and genteel nationalism with little that is insidious.
However, from my activism time with the likes of AFL standing opposite (etc.) the NF / BNP I know that I still sense check every time I see either flag flying outside a house or draped across the back of a lorry cab. This is a hateful legacy of the far right and leaves me with a smidgen of shame (mitigated in part by, I guess, a roughly 50% chance the Union Jack is insultingly upside-down if used to proclaim rampant nationalism / racism / anti-Semitism / $ism ).
As a final thought on our Syrian patron saint... Wouldn't St Alban have been a better choice (I mean, it would be seriously cool to have a patron who, amongst other miracles, made the eyes of his executioner fall out).
It is, I guess, moot to me, for like @tedster and many other of the AAEC denizens, my patron saint is St Piran whom, fairly, is not represented within the Union Jack as, it's status within the United Kingdom should (IMHO) be considered to be akin to Wales and Scotland.

I can show you a few estates in London where that will not be the case, problem is the flag gets displayed by the EDL and such and is seen as racist by some.

I'm proud to be British or English in the same sense i'm proud to have brown eyes, it's just a circumstance of birth i had no say in or control over and has no bearing on my character or how i conduct myself and neither does it have any bearing on how my fellow countrymen or indeed our representatives in government conduct themselves.

Strangely enough letsavit, the only other flag I saw locally was on a local Asian owned grocer's shop. Seems his son is a captain in the army. There are nutters on both sides for sure. We must ensure we don't tolerate either side. I've worked in the Middle East, Scotland and London. The most "race aware" was in London. Perhaps the pressures, and the marked division of wealth, are greater there.

I suppose it's part of our nature to clan together as a group. Be that English, British or even a local or national football supporter. For some strange reason we have this urge to be part of something. Yes I am proud to be a Yorkshireman, English, British, European, Earthling. For what it's worth I honestly believe we are all Earthlings and should be proud of it. Who cares where you came from, born or now reside. We are all human beings and need to live together and respect each other as human beings. Not Cornish or Yorkshire or even English, Scottish or Welsh. Lets face it we all piss and crap just the same, or should that be talk crap just the same.

buggritt ... Have seen London change even in my short life time, for the better, racism seems less and less with every generation but there will away be some that will pointlessly hate for some reason or other, yes not to be tolerated. I mostly see the flag displayed from racist groups and around football so do feel some see it as a racist symbol. Bobsbeer what even cockneys, everyone hates cockneys don't they....

Unfortunately the flag remind me to much of how we send a couple of dozen overpaid footballs on a all expense paid holiday every 4 years only for them to dash our expectations. There is nothing wrong with being proud of you country and I have never felt that people would brand me a racist like the pic in the OP suggests. I think the English identity thing is just the we are the majority in the UK and nothing more. Remember this?
