Being a (according to my wife) a 'certified/certifiable' CAMRA member and real ale hunter, any of you folks going to the Great British Beer Festival at Olympia in August and fancy meeting up for a beer and a small puff?

Shame it's in London!.... Really enjoyed a coupla 11/2 pint bottles of stout from the Green Jack Brewery (Lowestoft) on Monday.....realised the 'Baltic Trader Export' was 10.5% ABV....when it was gone!

Just had 'Bibble' - from the wild beer co - cracking ale but can't stop thinking of Rowan Atkinson.
"And in Genoa, it is the custom to stand with one foot in a bucket, pin a live frog to one's shoulder braid, and go 'Bibble' at passers-by."
Any other members on Untappd?

phatfil I challenge you to an evening on my homebrewed Woodforde's Wherry, nothing very high-tech compared to Bobsbeer and jevans, but very palatable and I bet you wouldn't know it's not commercially brewed apart from seeing me pour it from my KingKeg in the garage!! Our two experts (see above!) will no doubt have many more top-notch brews to tempt you with however!

Love real ales, just seems to go so well with vaping. There's a nice festival at Lelant (the watermill) which I attend every year.

I have made a few Wherries.

I've been to he GBBF a number of times and IMO it's way to big and a sea of mediocrity with a few gems hidden away. Earls Court was a dreadful place to enjoy a beer, going back to Olympia was a good move. I enjoyed the social side of it and met up with friends for a chat and then headed for the USA beers for something different. I but much prefer the smaller festivals.
I'm not a member of CAMRA but I really do think they need to open their eyes to the seachange in beer drinking. there's a young new and vibrant movement that's sweeping through the industry with brewers and drinkers that couldn't give a sh1t about the traditional (Tunnel vision) values that CAMRA keep banging on about, they just want to brew and drink great tasting beer. Things are looking up thought as despite CAMRA's shackles this is fast becoming a golden age for brewing/drinking beer.
Regarding home brewed beer, it's not hard to brew a beer at home that's far superior to the average pint pulled (or should I say dished up) in so many pubs, witness the amount of forward thinking and innovative brewers around now who served their apprenticeships at home, messing up their kitchens and smelling out the house.
Sorry for the rant but I brew and love beer and feel quite passionate about the subject .

I think you are right @scooby. A large proportion of the new brewers on the scene came though home brewing rather than off shoots of major brewers. Home brewed beer/ale and wine has never been better. The innovation and availability of quality ingredients has also never been better. The internet has been the major player here, allowing the dissemination of knowledge like never before. CAMRA has a different purpose, keeping the commercial brewers on the right path. It was never set up to police the home brew world, which has exploded in the last 15-20 years, and spawned many of the newer microbreweries around the UK. Your right, they need to reshape and re focus. The world has moved on, but their vigilance should not be dropped.

Have to agree with Scooby - CAMRA a bit blinkered regarding the surge in craft brews at the moment - but how can breweries /pubs justify charging the extortionate amount for them - in London half pint of Beavertown Neck oil £4.90!!!!!
