What a performance... Chrome on my laptop decided it had a corrupt preferences file and could not load my settings, plus kept loading extensions I did not want. Firefox, as usual recently, did not want to respond. So, I went to my desktop PC... updated Firefox to the latest version, and after a few minutes it decided it didn't want to respond either. Tried Chrome, and it didn't want to know... waiting, waiting. Have scanned with both Norton & Malwarebytes and no problems reported. Resorted to Windows Explorer and everything fine, apart from all the bookmarks that are not in there. Is it time to go home to the original? Have had years of no problems with Firefox, and even Chrome I had got used to, but why would both play up at the same time on two different systems? Anyone else had similar problems

No problems with chrome here (at work) RafflesDo you have Ccleaner on your machine and if so have you ran it recently ? There have been reports one version (dont know which one) of this causing the problem in chrome you describe. You could try updating to the latest version of Ccleaner and trying that, it has been reported to fix the issue for a lot of people. Other than that ......

Raffles - I updated to a new laptop yesterday, and after installing an antivirus program, my first stop was to download Firefox. It installed OK, but then refused to play ball. I then installed Chrome as a backup (we vapers know about such things!) and then used Chrome to install a new version of Firefox, which I'm now using - bizarre!! I think there could be a glitch somewhere in the common software - be patient, and someone somewhere will update and cure all our problems!!

Thanks guys. Just used the desktop again, and it's taken half an hour to get IE to work, and even now it's clunky. Think I need to go your route chykensa, and look for a new system... I think the squirrels have got into both of mine. If you don't hear from me for a while, you'll know they've taken over!

Hey there Raffles . Grab yourself Ccleaner and give that system a good cleaning out, then grab defraggler from the same site to tidy up your hard drive. If you still have performance issues then download and run malwarebytes antimalware. This will get rid of a lot of little nasties most anti virus programs dont kill. After that get rid of any toolbars/themes/skins/plugins you have for your browsers, they can also slow stuff down. This last little fix is normally used when networking is totally bust, but I've seen it solve severe latency issues as well For windows XP, click start>run then type cmd and press enter type netsh winsock reset catalog then press enter type netsh winsock ip reset then press enter then close down the black window For win 7, click start then type cmd in the search box and press enter type netsh winsock reset catalog then press enter type netsh winsock ip4 reset then press enter type netsh winsock ip6 reset then press enter then close the black window. These commands reset windows internal networking to it's default installation state which can help fix problems caused when a piece of software alters the networking stack. If all else fails, then try to disable your firewall for 5 mins and see if this solves the issue. If it does, then you need to reset or reinstall your firewall software (do not leave this disabled, it's a major security hole, just disable for a few mins to test)

Many thanks for that comprehensive response thatguy. In the short term I've done what I should have done before coming on here... that is, uninstall and reinstall, which is working at the moment, and haven't lost my bookmarks. Have now looked at ccleaner and will probably install next week when I have more time. Thanks again.

I have found Chome great and made the change after having to do a windows reinstall and finding i had lost all my bookmarks. With a Google account and Chrome all you bookmark and setting are store with Google. Also Chrome has flash written into the browser so when there is a flash update chrome have an update wait for you. Plus Chrome comes as a 64bit version if you have 64bit OS, dont think the 64bit firefox is even out yet.

Firefox has it's sync feature hijack . It basically backs up all your browser settings including addons, skins, bookmarks, menus etc and can sync them to any firefox version including android. So if you reinstall windoh!s or buy a new device, your settings are restored as soon as you sign in. The 64 bit version of firefox is in developer stage just now (alpha and beta versions), but the switch to 64 bit wont make much of a difference to most people since a browser shouldn't need that kind of addressing space or work with numbers requiring that range and precision. 64 bit computing is kinda overhyped for many situations. Both chrome and firefox are good bits of software though, and people should just pick whichever one they prefer the look and feel of.
