Hi fellow mixers
My first attempt at a custard mix (PVC) many moons ago was a complete let down probably because of the iclear 30 tank I was using back in the day and the fact that I only let it steep for 2 weeks. It just tasted very bland with very little depth or noticeable vanilla flavour
Since switching to subohm vaping I have found that all my diy mixes have hit new heights in flavour so I am thinking of having another go at a few custard recipes.
Most of the recipes that I have looked at have Capella vanilla custard and french vanilla in common and then some use dulce de leche, some use cotton candy and some use ethel maltol.
Are these all basically the same thing or does each have different attributes? ... which would you recommend? (I have all of these somewhere in my concentrates box)
Also, what is the difference between V1 and V2 Capella vanilla custard and which is recommended.
All advice gratefully welcome ... thanks in advance.

To answer your last question first, @yinyang, the V2 Capella Vanilla Custard (VC) is without nasties which are present in V1. Unfortunately I, and I believe many others, prefer the v1 because the nasties help with the creaminess of flavour and the v2 tastes rather bland and 'flat' in comparison. Ultimately the decision is yours; you have to try them both and then decide which to use based on taste and understanding the minute extra risk that vaping the nasties brings (although my personal opinion is that the risks are so small compared to smoking tobacco, but that's up to you to to decide!). You are right in thinking that all the versions of Custard recipes are just variations on a theme, and with slightly different percentages of the VC and French Vanilla. My own recipe (if I can be so bold as to call it that!) is 18% Cap VC v1, 5% Cap French Vanilla, and 1% Ethyl Maltol. It works for me, and I enjoy vaping it, to the extent that I have some supplies cached away for steeping and sufficient to keep me going for a few weeks as well. Bavarian Cream, Cotton Candy, Smooth, Dulche de Leche, and even Marshmallow are all used for subtle variations and are worth trying as our palates are all different. Hope this helps answer some of your questions - I'm sure you will have further collaboration soon

Thanks Andy chykensa for your reply above. How long would you recommend steeping for? I have an iron will power when it comes to steeping and am used to steeping my ginger rollie ADV for 6 weeks so don't hold back in your recommendation ... I would rather get it right first time rather than continually test and leave for another while and so on as infinitum.

Personally I steep for a minimum of 4 weeks, more if I can. I'm currently vaping some custard which is nearly 3 months old, and it's like liquid gold (of course I would say that, wouldn't I!?). The more steeping it gets, the better seems to be, so mix regularly to build up stocks, and then keep on mixing some more, and you'll never be custard-less

One final question Andy, if I may ... I have some v2 on it's way. ... Is there anything that I could add (creamey wise) to make it more like v1 or should I just prise open the wallet again and order some v1? I don't want to waste time with v2 mixes if they won't give me the best possible result.

I hope Andy doesn't mind me chipping in @yinyang . . . . you could try adding some Bavarian Cream to your V2 Capella to give it more depth.
Personally I'd keep it for using in a combined recipe, where you're adding a fruit flavour perhaps - rather than in a straight VC, where the custard flavour ( or lack of ) is going to be more noticeable.
Then crack open the wallet to get some V1 . . . . .

Good idea to keep the v2 stuff for flavoured custards once I get the basics sorted. Thanks for all the good advice from you and Andy ... I have a few custard recipes that I want to try so I will report back in about 6 weeks.

Don't mind at all Perpetua, you've basically said what i would have done; keep the v2 for combined mixes, and get some v1 for the recipes where custard is the main player. Glad we've been able to help you, @yinyang

I have a few custard recipes that I want to try so I will report back in about 6 weeks. OK, as promised I am reporting on the results after a 6 week steep. I made 3 basic custard mixes as well as a few mixes that had custard as an ingredient. This is my ranking of the 3 basic custard mixes all of which hit the spot but were slightly different. Joint first place: Perp's Custardy Lovechild and Grant's V4 vanilla Custard A worthy second place: Kreed's Custard .... not sweet enough for my tastes so I have added 1% sweetner and will let it steep for a few days and give it another go.
