My thoughts and sentiments exactly. This is purely humanitarian in intent and hopefully deed. As I see it the people will take these risks whether we help or not. My aim is to make their suffering and misery a little less. No more and no less. I agree that this help may encourage others to follow. That view may be right. My view is they will come anyway as they are desperate. As a human being I cannot stand by and watch this every day and night without doing something, however little to help ease that misery and suffering. If that is political, then so be it.

Dear lord I can't be doing with that Chrissie - thank you and @tubthumper for endeavouring to assist me though. I can't be doing with it either, lucky I live here and found it freely But understand y @tubthumper did it over there, rules r rules, it is what it is and so forth. But back on topic: As I see this appeal it only about stopping desperate people needlessly drowning and not about where they settle or this countries current challenges. Regardless of politics give or not, there is no pressure or judgement either way. Actually VB, I'm at the limit of what I feel I can give to our forum in terms of Moderation . . . . 5 years in a role I've loved and hope to continue for a while yet despite the abuse I've taken on the chin privately. This thread in spite of the sincerity of the intention is a nightmare to moderate. Chrissie and I really need to get some sleep - so what would you do? Leave it open or temporarily lock it whilst everyone gathers their thoughts in the light of day.

Perpetua I'm not seeing any angst on this thread - yet (& fingers crossed, there won't be) so I don't see any need to lock it.

Sorry Bobsbeer but I won't be donating either. I've just sent a £100 humanitarian aid package to my daughters boyfriend who is serving in Afghanistan. You know from experience how ex service personnel are treated, well the way current serving personnel are treated leaves a lot to be desired.

Leave it open or temporarily lock it whilst everyone gathers their thoughts in the light of day. Leave it open there have been no falling outs or other bad feelings, no name calling etc, Perpetua & Chrissie u do your though job well, but there is a far more infilamentary thread ATM that has out lived another on similarish subject matter that I would think far far more problematic than both, I just see this thread as trying to be kind to other humans. Hostly I can not see a why this thread is an issue, you may not like it as in Oxfam, Red Cross, Sally Army and many other ask you for cash, while it is obviously not in the same league as those great organisations it is essentially just doing a vary similar thing. Members can contribute or not, no controversy, no compulsion, no telling members how to think, no asking members to become jihadists, would it be an issue it it was an animal charity posting a link...

The thread should be fine surely no one would stoop so low as to belittle a charity thread.

I honestly can't see why this thread is controversial. I am not forcing people to do anything. I am asking for help on behalf of human beings in misery. Those who disagree with it's intent can ignore or dismiss. That's fine and I understand. I also agree that this is just one small effort and is competing against other equally worthy causes for your hard earned cash. All I can say is please don't rubbish the effort. The appeal is universal, non political, humanitarian, in that among the thousands there will be people of all walks of life. All religions, and all political leanings. To me they are all in need and deserve our help. Simple.

An update on the appeal. Still a very long way to go, but today we reached £100 with 14 people donating. A very BIG to those on here who have supported the effort. Time will tell if the goal is reached, but one thing is for sure. I am not alone in wanting to help and relieve the suffering we see daily on our screens. So thanks for your support, it is much appreciated. Please consider supporting this appeal and please spread the word on Facebook and Twitter and other online means. As one supporter put it on the site, "If 10,000 caring souls donate £5, collectively, we may save a few lives. But we will certainly ease the journey of suffering for many more.Join the "Ten Thousand", Pledge £5."

I've donated, everyone needs help sometimes .
I think I have 3 direct debits going out to animal charity's , 3 children's , 4 disability charity's and I' pay £10 to any big issue vendor I see.
Wife says I'm soft maybe she's right but we all need help sometimes .
