Confused by terminology

tipsyturtle - then you've answered that question. Wash everything apart from the item you replaced and you'll be OK. And as others have said, you only need to wash that out every couple of weeks, it's the coil which will need to be changed more regularly when it gets to the stage you described, tasting of caramelised gunk, i.e. charcoal type flavour!

That's all really helpful, everyone... I know it's probably blindingly obvious, but I just didn't want to take a chance, (even though it's only a £20 kit!) and risk ruining it. I think sometimes the instructions that come with gadgets are written by people who are so accustomed to using the thing that they forget how it appears to a total beginner.
