I was wondering how people disposed of batteries.
I have a broken 50W stick and a VTC4 to dispose of. I thought of sticking it into the old batteries bucket in the supermarket, but the power of these things worries me - having seen the venting issue from another member.

I just got rid of 2 sticks by offering them free on here, it cost me a couple of quid postage but knew they were going on to be used again as spares. And the person that took them agreed to put postage cost in local charity box, so everyone wins.

The local council disposal centre should take them, ideally you should drain the battery flat as you can. Easy for the VTC on a mech but if the iStick wont fire people used to do this by leaving the battery in salt water but some say this can cored the battery before it fully drains, but I am not aware of another method without opening it up.

Used batteries aren't inert and there is a residual fire risk.
The method I use for racing batteries (higher amperage but still 3.7v) is to put them into a metal contain containing 3 tablespoons of salt per 100ml tap water. Leave for at least 4 days and then dispose in the local battery recycle service. In my case I'm lucky, I place them in a council provided "battery bag" which is left on top of my wheelie bin and they are taken and a replacement bag left behind for the next batch.

Stick a couple of wraps of sellotape over the positive or negative end of the VTC4 then lob it in the bin in Tesco............ Then run!

Need to be careful with those Tesco battery bins. The hole isn't big enough for all batteries (an old Yamaha battery was a bugger to force).
Seriously though. insulating tape and talk to the contractor at the dump to confirm it's okay / pass on responsibility (mine said it was okay... I confess to being concerned). Mind you, I don't know how the recycling centres differentiate the batteries.

Discharge the ones that aren't already, tape over the ends and send the box to the internal battery recycling place at work when the box hits 5kg. I have 468 mostly AA's sitting there waiting to get sent off in the internal mail.
I feel sorry for the internal mail guy the day I send in the UPS batteries for recycling.
