I suppose your Grandad must feel that he would be tempted back to smoking if he cut down on his gum? Is there a particular health complaint that your Grandad has where nicotine could make it worse?
At the end of the day Bee, he is an adult and if his choice is to try out an e-cig then it's up to him.
You never know, he might be able to cut down his nicotine consumption if his hand to mouth habit was being satisfied.
What does your Gran think about him getting an e-cig?

Whatever device you decide to get him, as an alternative to pre-filled cartos you could always get him a Stardust (Vision eGo etc.), they are as easy as anything to fill and you can see when they need topping up.

If he likes the Riva, get him a Riva. From what you have said he still has all his gumption and wherewithall about him, so using it once he gets the hang of it may not be beyond him. I've had people a lot younger than retirement age try mine and forget to push the button.
Start him off with a few prefilled carto's and show him how to refil the others. I think it took most of a us an attempt or to when we started to get it right, so no reason why he wouldn't be able to pick it up himself. Unless he's not physically able to in some way ? If you show him a couple of different methods like the condom way or the drip from the top way to fill them he will be able to pick the one he feels most comfortable with.
If he doesn't have any usb points then a mains plug like the type you get for iphones would do the job fine, connect the charger into the plug and away he goes.

He's physically able to use the riva, he will just need to get the hang of it I reckon. I think I'm going to get him the riva 1100 kit and get Jason to swap the atomiser for cartos like he did for me then I've got a golden burginia juice he can try and I think rather than condom filling which he will find difficult as I don't think he's dexterous enough if that makes sense? I'll Get him some needle filler tips and show him how to do it that way, that's the way I've started to do it now coz the condom method was doing my head in lol. Thanks everyone for all your input your all brill!!! X

Hi Bee! just my thoughts here-
I often forget there are adults in this world who are free to make their choices! but still I feel rather uncomfortable with anyone swapping one bearable nic fix (gum) with what may turn out to be a more expensive alternative. There are soo many folk who are just unable to get away with the patches/gum/inhalator things in the first place and have not been able to survive on NRT at all. Wondered how miserable your grandad is on the gum?!

We are a bit on the outside of accepted smoking cessation opinion and who knows what will eventually happen. I'm sure though that nic gum will still be freely available

Got to admit this is a tricky one I think a lot would depend on how much he is addicted to the nicotine in the gum or the chewing of it as an alternative to smoking. If it's more habit than addiction, then IMHO, he could find it easier to cut down the nicotine intake via an e-cig? On the other hand, I'm not keen on recommending using an e-cig to someone who has already given up smoking for some considerable time. Lol, sorry Bee, that's not very helpful is it

It is a tricky one isn't it? and every individual is free to make their own choice.
My mum, bless her!, was a smoker until she gave up cigarettes when she was first diagnosed with cancer (but has survived with a load of complications that go with it). She hated the gum but just put up with it at the time as that was the only alternative available.
I wouldn't dream in a squillion years of introducing/suggesting this safer alternative to her in the first place. I think she's gone past all nic consumption though.

It is really hard I think with the gum he is addicted to the nicotine as opposed to it being habit but I'm unsure as to whether he's just wanting an e-cig coz he's seen mine and likes the 'novelty' of it if that makes sense. It's not like he's in my situation, I was smoking 15 a day before I got my kit but he's not smoked for years do as I say I'm not sure if he's just seeing it as something new to try for the hell of it. He's never mentioned the gum giving him grief up till now so I'm wondering if that's just a tad too coincidental maybe? I might just leave it for a week or so and see if the fascination wears off.

You could always ask him, and ask how much he spends on gum per week. (iirc it ain't cheap). But let's face it, at his age he can do what he likes

I agree with dom, he's a grown man & if he wants an e-cig I rekon he should have one.
I wouldn't want people to make decisions on my behalf.

I think its great your Grandads looking at the ecig, I've been using gum at work as I can only vape on breaks and sometimes it makes me gag its disgusting if you over chew it which is all I could think of when I read your post sounds to me like after all these years he still misses the hand to mouth and psychological side of smoking maybe rather than putting him back to smoking it could have the opposite effect it will stop him having a break down and going back to smoking at a later date and others have said he is old enough to do what he likes all you can do is guide him!
