changing it would require them to develop an artificial intelligence, self learning self aware system, doing that has thus far proven rather difficult for most companies and whilst eBay could probably fund a team to produce something, if its capable of self learning then its operating scope can change to other things, it might determine that the only way to prevent people from violating eBay's policy is to kill them and then take steps to do it....
eBay could as you say employ a team of analysts to once an hour search for certain terms and enforce policies based on them but in reality that team requires a salary, would need to have a team per category and the associated premises costs would be exorbitant, eBay prefers to run a data enter with a couple of servers and have 99% of the job performed automatically based on a set of defective algorithms, that cuts down on operating costs and maximises profits, if they changed that business model then in all reality they will probably increase fees to 25% of sales +taxes ... already the separation of PayPal from eBay has seen the fees increase considerably compared to the rates applied a few years back, making it no longer profitable to flog stuff on there (as if the buyer protection policies weren't bad enough) very much reversing the ability of the average person to start up a profitable business in their bedroom.....

Surely they could block listings with the same tool that they probably already have to block swearwords.

they could but those tools are very basic and problematic, consider if I want to sell electrical wire for circuit builders either kanthal or ni based then my listing will get blocked because of e-cigs, if I want to sell a high power push button operated modified battery unit with discharge control for electronics geeks then it gets blocked because of e-cigs
so I just block the combinations; e-cig, ecig, e_cig, e cig, and hope that fixes the issue, if I block the word atomiser/atty (or other spellings) I block the sale of non banned products, and so on, the listing filter can also be defeated in other ways including with swear words that are misspelt and so on,
it would be better if eBay were to change their policy and just prevent the sale of PG since that's the only part the FDA actually has a problem with (apparently PG when subjected to certain temps gives off chemicals that are more dangerous to health over time than anything in a standard fag) given that its not the product used but the stuff consumed that the FDA is able to ban from sale (disposable is not consumable, consumers eat/drink /inhale) making eBay's policy a figment of their own imagination ....

It would be better if eBay had competition and not the monopoly, it's run by robots and grasses.

but it does have competition, there's QXL, no wait they bought them out back in 1999, how about ....... no cant think of any other online auction site that isn't tied to B&M auction house chain, perhaps your right but it wont happen given how long eBay has been around and just how much integration they have with customs etc all over the world, too big and too useful to various government agencies to get pulled down/

There is also eBid but unfortunately they just don't get the site traffic There's also CQout but as above. Unfortunately eBay got in there first and became the auction site that tripped off of everyones tongues, once that was cemented even with their extortionate selling fees they were made, add in the once in-house payment provider in Paypal and they were sorted and had the market sown up. No one can get close to them. For buyers it's great as it offers another choice, but they treat sellers very poorly and then charge them a fortune for the priviledge.

"Hello Alan, Thank you for your email. My name is prick and I’ll assist you further in regards to the removal of your Evic mini kit listing and similar listings active on site. Alan, if you see similar listings on eBay that doesn't mean that we’ve made an exception for them. It’s just that don't we want the extra cost to review them in timely manner, and what we choose to miss we make money on, because of sheer volume and millions of items listed daily on site. By the time we remove a prohibited item, a new item is listed. Rest assured, our policies apply to all the sellers on eBay uniformly. We are keeping a tab over such items, and you will find gradual decrease in the items which are in breach of our policies. You can also grass other members selling the same as item as you through ‘Report an item’ link at right hand side on listing page Just for your reference, I will mumble some bull shit why we removed your listings. Due to strict Government Regulations that don't exist on e cigs and owing to the adverse effects of the consumption of Tobacco and Nicotine on human health, eBay doesn't allow the sale of products containing Tobacco or Nicotine under Tobacco Products Policy. This includes, e-cigarettes and its components/integral parts , cigarettes, herbal cigarettes, and smokeless tobacco as well as e-shisha or e-hookahs liquid containing Nicotine . Our policy also extends to e-cigarette component parts (including but not limited to): cartridges, atomisers, liquid refills, vaporisers, batteries, clearomiser, coils and shells. Also, we do not allow any items manufactured by e-cigarette companies. I’d like to inform you that Joytech is an e-cigarette manufacturer and so we took action on your listings. We sincerely request you not to relist such items on site. To know more about our Tobacco Products Policy, please refer the following link: Feckoffcantarsedreadingmotebullshit.com I hope I’ve been able to explain things clear as mud. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter. Kind Regards, eBay hypocritical prick"
Ok I might of edited a couple of things but you yet the jest of my reply....!

is ebid still going ? I thought it closed down maybe it was just my account they closed lol never bothered to read the email properly,
as for QXL your probably right, I stopped using them back in 02 and by then half the stuff listed every day was fetish gear.... tbh I think ebay was just smarter about how they traded than the rest, cheaper fees simpler listing process better search system and the paypal ty-in that made them a no brainer for sellers and buyers then the aggressive marketing campaigns and everyone flocked to them, and I agree they are now quite bad towards vendors in the same way that rakuten group treats sellers on its web portal compared to the relatively decent way play used to treat them...
seems like its more an owners profits market rather than a buyers or sellers market, hopefully enough people will switch from ebay to their own web portal that it will go back to being a better place to trade without so many policy updates you need an admin assistant to keep up.....

Spiel . . . . which in fairness the Ebay representative is paid to quote - the Report button always has and continues to reign supreme on the site. Whilst Ebay remains as popular/successful as it is, I don't see them rushing to change that anytime soon.
