For the first time ever, I never even bothered to turn on the TV. Didn't see a trailer for anything worth watching so just left the googlebox firmly in the off position. Having said that, we were out most of the day, came back home about 11 ish with both daughters and their boyfriends had a few cans of Kopparberg and a few laughs till about 4 in the morning. No TV required.

I'm afraid it's all down to money, yet again. It costs so much to make anything on TV these days, that production companies find it just as cost-effective to make quiz shows; cheap set, cheap music, cheap 'stars', and almost no script to write. If we want decent new TV series, we have to either pay much more on our BBC licence fee or tolerate many more adverts on the commercial channels - and neither of these would go down well with the great British viewing public

Yes, as it's all down to greed! The great British public have to pay for a TV licence, does anyone think they get value for money? I don't see that you do, repeat upon repeat, overpaid presenters/'celebrities' & adverts, albeit for their own carp, but ads just the same. I hear more & more, that pay their TV licence, then have a Sky full package, still not finding anything to watch & they then pay yet more for Netflix or one of the others.

well I watched the queens speech on catchup and then I went back to the port before collapsing into my bed after such a rude awakening at 0400 only 2 hours after santa visited the children (damn wrapping always keeps me up late) ....
one year I will take a nap on xmass eve so i'm ready for the inevitable silly clock wake up with overexcited offspring sharing details of what was in their stocking...... and I might even manage to get all the presssies wrapped up a few weeks ahead of schedule to boot, but every year I plan to do all that and every year something stops me (normally the kids) from achieving those megre goals ....
I feel the TV on the terrestrial channels has been generally poor for many years though

F1 shouldn't change much, Channel 4 have said no adverts during races, practice & qualifying shown for the races they have live and Radio 5 will still live coverage of all the races. I just hope they put it on the www as the beeb did.

Its not just TV that the licence fee pays for there is also the radio channels which i am convinced keep the nation sane during their hours of commuting.. If i had endured 2-4hours of commercial radio on a daily basis im fairly sure i would have gone postal

I think the government forcing them to pay for the over 75s is a killer for them. An extremely nasty act by a government that wants rid of, or at least a much smaller BBC. BTW I think Channel 4 will do a great job of F1.
I love the the BBC, and it is great value IMHO, but it needs a kick up the arse. iPlayer is the standard that most broadcasters can only hope to reach and after the MLB app is the best there is. Its Radio coverage is still sublime. I am amazed at the the quality and quantity it produces.
Having said that I think the BBC has been suckered into the cult of the celebrity - who the hell is Gabby Logan anyway . Its TV news coverage is risible it spends too much time fighting ratings wars. The BBC doesn't do sport very well anymore when compared to other broadcasters. Channel 4s coverage of the para-olympics was very good, better than the BBC's coverage of the main event. Look at the golf coverage - Peter Allis was the lead commentator hardly the way to encourage new players into the game. Jake Humphries was dreadful for F1 - he could dumb down a game of snakes and ladders. Suzy Perry is better, at least she has an understanding of the sport, and why the hell David Dimbleby still doing question time - time for new blood. Peston would have been my choice, not everybody's cup of tea but younger, dynamic and I suspect he can still go to the loo on his own.

MY sum total of TV viewing this year has been Dr who and Casualty, both on catchup via Iplayer......why do I pay for a licence when legally I dont need one? I wouldn't mind if they spent the cash on decent programming not the voyeuristic tripe the vomit out at us. I'm a celebrity, get my x factor big brother come dancing bake off out of here!!!! Bah bloody humbug!! (ok, i know many of these programs are on C4 etc, but gota pay licence fee even to watch that trollope

Every year we have he same complaint. TV has become a go to for the morons. I keep waiting for HRH to say "innit", then I can leave it off entirely. The fact that Downton was the most watched (how do they know that?) tells you everything you need to know. They were all so nice weren't they, the aristocracy? Come Dancing, despite the fact that few watching can do a step, number two. And I say that in both senses of the phrase. Soaps, watching people live banal humdrum lives while living a banal humdrum life. I was too busy anyway, building an ark in the back garden
