zeldamum Helen, you can imagine I have this conversation regularly with people.
My advice is always 'if the animal will incur no greater suffering than they are suffering now and if they are comfortable then make the decision at a time when one is psychologically ready and prepared'.

Although this is my standard answer I also reiterate it to friends and family. I also take on board vets advice because in my logic they want your animal alive as long as is humanely possible because it means you have to pay for their on going care. If they suggest it's 'now the time' then I always want a second opinion from a different practice. If it's the same advice then that helps me structure the decision.

It's one of the most difficult decision any animal lover makes.

zeldamum Helen - sorry my dear, something's come up with my van and I have to get it sorted short-term so that I can continue to have transport around the county for work. Will have to pass up the offer of a coffee tomorrow, but will try to clear the decks for an hour next Tuesday!

Thank you all for the good luck for tomorrow. I think I am going to need it. Just got home from work, was due to finish at 10pm, but had to stay late because the shutter people turned up to fix the shutters, so going to be a tad tired tomorrow. Still haven't told my boss I have the interview....oops
