Thanks for the vid zuza--knew about MS,s big brother act on W10, but didn,t realise it was being cascaded down to W7/8. Not that it matters much to me......switched to Linux post XP and use Mint Cinnamon 17.3 on my new pc and LXLE on my aged lappy----never looked back. Wish more people realise that there is a life beyond Microsoft and there are a hell of a lot of good Linux distros out there Ubuntu being a good one too for new users. It isn,t all command line stuff now like it was a few years back with good gui,s, and little malware and virus,s about. And no tracking......
But hey --It can,t be any good cos they are free to use-----can they..........lol Don,t you believe it !!!!

I reckon this is why when our prime minister says they want every house in the country to have high speed broad band installed it aint got nothing to do with you having access to the web, the government wants access to you.

Ah good a convert I see........ my new build has 16gb of ram so I aim to use virtualbox or similar to try Manjaro, that may change tho as I may try others---yes there are so many good distros out there but how the hell do you convert people if they are blinkered. I gave up long ago and now use with a smile on my face.....

There's a few things you can do beyond the obvious opt-outs, such as stopping some of the telemetry services (for instance the Diagnositic Tracking Service ("diagtrack") and then changing it's start up command... But Microsoft is sneaky and will introduce new services and re-enable through updates... So a powershell script at start up might be good.
Regarding data sucking need to find a way to redirect text files into Microsoft products - you know, nice big ones like the Bible, OED, the Quaran, War and Peace, Anarchists Cookbo..... through the keyboard into another microsoft product..... Seed Google and other tracking organisations with random search strings (easier under Linux) / data.
Not that this will truly help... Tor is your friend, ideally through a VPN, whilst performing drive by open wifi hunting (was that called "Wardriving"?) and for heavens sake, work out a way of hacking your MAC addresses and spoof your IMIE numbers (illegal).
More extreme paths are to turn off various tracking features on your mobile (removing battery probably also makes sense when not in use)
Next step is to move entirely off grid, wrap your house in chicken wire and avoid any processed food (due to the `smart water` type nano-RFID chips you consume)...
I agree with Linux, though - it does reduce the amount of specifically Microsoft snooping (oft eliminating).
For truly secure on-line communications, use a combination of open forums and 1time pads.

I keep meaning to set up my system to dual build and use Windows for gaming only. About time I picked up another new skill... My 'nix skills are all a bit rusty and prefixed with either a U (various) or <ahem> Xe

I'll have a lot to learn when I do that... short of putting a distro onto a USB stick to peak at, I've not used any 'Nix variant for at least 18 years. Mind you, I can still remember a few vi commands (do I really want to go back there.....)
Eeek - just thought - vi and dyslexia will most certainly not play nice together.

Regarding the video in the op, I cant help wondering if the guy has a wooly bunnet on so you cant see his tin foil hat The bit about collecting contacts, calender info, speech patterns, handwriting (touchscreen only) etc is all to do with Cortana so you can say things like Hey Cortana, when am I meeting so and so for lunch etc. It can be turned off easily and as it says - Turning this off blah blah and clears what this device knows about you. Can't stop automatic updates ? Maybe, but you can defer them then ignore them if you want. Then the bit about reading your private content ? No. They will access and disclose stuff to ..... apply with applicable law or respond to valid legal process (that's the first one on the list) cant be bothered typing out more. Now, I'm not saying the situation is all great and the wording is a bit dubious in places, but its no worse than what Android, Apple, Google etc collect and that's usually all turned on by default as well, never mind Facebook and the like. Even 99% or more of the web sites you visit try and track some form of your activity. When I first saw the reports of Win 10 tracking your every move I looked around before I upgraded to see what it was about ...... then upgraded anyway and spent less than 5 minutes going through the settings and turning a few things off. Disclaimer - I use Windows, I am not a total fanboy (I hate that word), I have no objection to Linux and have used it myself at times.

Of course, there is one way to ensure no spying....
Never ever connect it to the outside world (and that may mean opening a laptop up and removing the WiFi antenna).
Oh - and that chicken wire thing to deal with those sly Van Ech phreakers
