It appears that Fasttech are not honouring the CNY discount code as I stuck in a digital watch (dead big explosive battery I know, you see one handed peeps walking about all the time as their watches exploded and left them handless ). They asked if I wanted to cancel it and I asked about the discount but they replied in the negative.

If anyone has 45 minutes to kill, here is a national geographic program on a plane that had a cargo of them

This is from the Final Report (page 122+) for that incident lee Uncontained Cargo Fire Leading to Loss of Control Inflight and Uncontrolled Descent Into Terrain Boeing 747-44AF N571UP Dubai United Arab Emirates 03 September 2010 Specific packaging requirements for shipment should include the following: • Requiring that cells or batteries be separated to prevent short circuits • Requiring “strong outer packaging” or UN specification packaging • Limits on the numbers of cells or batteries placed in a single package • Specific labels for outer packages • Hazardous material shipping training for employees engaged in packaging cells or batteries for transport Lithium-ion battery reliability and safety is generally considered a function of the entirety of the cell, pack, system design, and manufacture, dependent on a robust quality process and benchmarked to international standards. To undertake the above is quite a challenge. All batteries for despatch would need examination before loading by the look of it to be adequately confident. Think production needs to be in user countries to eliminate any hazard realisation to aircraft. Or they go by sea and are stored? Prices are going to rise a lot I'd say. the simple answer would be for the factories to pack the cells in foam lined plastic hard shell cases and then they could be shipped as pre packed shrink wrapped units (single /double /triple /quad) those plastic boxes would then provide all the protection necessary per cell to eliminate the majority of risk(s), obviously if a sudden impact occurred of sufficient G's then a pallet full of them could still end up as a giant hole in the tarmac but it would be less likely to do so with proper handling and could itself be mitigated through the use of jiffy bags .. the problem with shifting factories from where the minerals are extracted to localities where they are used is on that could best be understood through looking at what happened at the former port www.bing.com/images/search?q=Tianjin+Explosion+Before+and+After&FORM=IDMHDL now that was put down to a few hundred pounds of lithium getting wet thanks to a sprinkler triggered by a fire in an adjacent storage area.... you cant ship that stuff by plane in case it sheds the protective layer and spontaneously combusts with the moisture in the air but you also cant ship to much a t a time by boat either ..... and that was barely enough for a production run of 10k x 18650li-ion cells which begs the question how the hell would you get the raw materials in sufficient quantity from extraction point to the factory in order to produce the cells required ? no production is best done elsewhere and the final product shipped here, the only option then is to insist the factories change methodology, something that would of itself cut down on the clone /re-wrap problems seen in the last few years as well and increase general end user safety as well as transport safety, but that would need the likes of Samsung and LG to implement the changes and they wont do (it reduces their ability to flog on the qa failures to the clone /re-wrap teams bumping production costs) or move to a newer safer technology that still does the same thing

A pallet of them went up without any cause, it was just on one of the Documentary channels within the last few weeks. Fire started in a pallet of Lipoly batteries and with the aircraft being a combined cargo/passenger flight all were lost.
The fire slowly burnt through to the cabin, but this took a good while before the heat and flames had caused shorts in the electrical circuitry which made the plane uncontrollable, something like 120 lives lost.
They just were not close enough to an airport to land.
